Anybody have any more experience with that intermittent starting issue in these things? Seems to be getting more common for me this winter. Turn the key, it turns over, and then I let go of the key and she doesn't light. Then when I try again, it's like the engine is flooded. I have to give it gas to start, which I know is a no-no in fuel injected vehicles. Other than that, it's fine. No sputters, no hiccups, runs strong, good mpg, etc. But I'm getting annoyed
You know what, mine has done that a couple of times also. The cold doesn't affect it, matter-o-fact, its only done it after driven. Its happened about 3 times and I was thinking that maybe I didn't hold the starter long enough but now that you mention it, I know I hold the starter the same amount of time every time! When it happens, I just hit the starter again and it stutters a bit like its floaded and then about the third time it cranks up. I don't push the gas pedal at all (like you said, fuel-injected no-no). Can anyone else shed any light?
I have had the same thing happen to me several times and thought I didn't hold the key long enough. This has happened to my friend several times also in his 05.
Yep it has happened to me several times. I do not hit the gas. I wait for about ten seconds, then give a second shot, and it starts right up. I figure it's just a hiccup either in the PCM, or maybe the fuel line. No big deal.
How long are you waiting from the fuel pump kicking on, to the crank? It could be that the colder weather is making the pumps and lines finicky. Try waiting a few seconds from fuel pump turn on, to cold cranking.
ill try waiting a little longer and see but i dont think the 60 and 70 degrees temp is going to have that much of an effect. i usualy just get in and start just ive done with my last 4 f150s that have never done this.

I have had this happen to me too. I agree that if you wait a few seconds for the fuel pump (especially when it's cold out) it will work fine.
My '05 has been doing it for a while now... I never thought much of it.. It really caught my attention while I was down in FL yesterday.. After it was running already for a few hours (it was shut-off then restarted about 2hrs later)
It even did it for my oil change Fri. at the dealer
Mine has been doing it for a while now also (20k miles on mine). I am wondering if a sensor is going bad. This happens to me about 3 times a week. More so if I cut the truck off and start it after a few minutes (like when running into a store or getting gas). This never in front of the service techs of course. Sometimes it lets out a puff of smoke after it starts when it does this. Reminds me of a timing issue. Just glad I have the 100k warranty, and hopefully it will do it one time in fromt of the techs at the dealership.
Also, I always wait a few seconds after the fuel pump kicks in and my needle on the fuel moves up before cranking.
Just listen to the guy above and do what you are supposed to do anyway. Turn the key to on, let the fuel pump pump fuel, and crank. It is the EXACT same in EVERY make and model of fuel injected motors. It has always been like this and will remain as long as we use electric pumps.
