I have located an 8" rear for possible exchange for my "farmer's geared" Spicer. In reading the forums and mag's, mostly mentioned are 9" rears. Is the 8 inferior to the 9?? If so why?? Any opinions/advice would be appreciated.
The 8" is weaker then the 9". But it is one of them "it depends things" if you are going to run a engine that has been "built" you should get a 9". But if your going to use a engine that is stock or just lightly touched then a 8" would work just fine. The 9" has the better aftermarket stuff ( more gears, disc brake kits and such).
The thing to remember is if you change the rearend your wheel bolt pattern will be different, unless you can find a older rearend.
You could also re-gear your Spicer, it is kind of pricey, you have to get a 3.73 carrier and then what ever gears you want. I would also replace all the bearings, but you would have a rearend that is more or less new. Plus the added benefit that most of the early spicers were limited slip.
Hope this helps.

I forgot the good news. If you rebuild your spicer, check with your local shops. When I was thinking of changing mine. The local shop was willing to trade me carriers. They had carriers from guys who had Four bys who had changed out low ranges to high gears. You could save the cost of a new carrier(which was $275 4 years ago). Good Luck.
