It will be a interesting retro fit,early fords had mechanical clutchs and 57 and later had hydraulic clutch's.I haven't seen any articles on this, so all I can do is guess.I would think there is two ways to do this. 1 if the 61 tranny will bolt up to the 56 bellhouseing then you use your original clutch. 2 if the tranny will not bolt up, then you use the 61 bellhouseing and then some kind of kit to bolt a hydraulic cylinder to the frame, such as used when upgrading the brakes to a dual master cylinder.
I would think if possible the 2nd option would be best because hydraulic clutchs are self adjusting.
Hopefully someone on this board has done this and can tell you exactly what to do. Good luck

If you are unable to make your 61 transmission work in your 56, let me know. I know some people in our local club that have 3 speed transmissions out of 56's.
If you run across anyone that knows how to put a newer automatic behind a 56 223 six-cylinder that has a 4 speed behind it send them my way.
i just have one little question when did ford ever put a hydraulic clutch in a 60's 70's or even 80's trucks? i have owned 8 61-66 f100's and they were all mechanical. i have owned 3 73-79 f100's they were all mechanical. and 2 83 f100's they were both mechanical. i even have an 87 mustang and that is mechanical. i think it should be a simple swap your only concern will be bellhousing bolt pattern. for the tranny. since the clutch spline should be the same. did you say you have a 272?if so i know there is a bellhousing that will work witha 4spd. because i have one in my 63 f250.

ford started with hydraulic clutches in 57. My 60 had one 223 W/T98 and so did my 94 4x4 300 W/what ever the 5 speed was. And so did the mustangs but I don't know when they start in them. The 90's high performance ones had hydraulic through out bearings, witch is supposed to be better then the slave cylinder style.
The early 80's trucks used a hydraulic slave setup with the truck 4 speeds, but, it wasn't servicable, it had to be replaced as a whole, it couldn't be bled either, and it seems to be alot more troublesome than the manual clutch setups.
