Do you have any previous history on the truck? If you can, find out as much as possible from the previous owner. How many miles are on it?

I still think you have a clogged catalytic converter. Unhook your exhaust at the downpipe and take your truck for a spin.

I bet you'll notice a real improvement in power, especially when you downshift for passing or hills. If that fixes it, take your cat off, hog it out, replace it if you feel the call or are in an are where the vehicle is smog inspected.

Have the truck scanned for codes to start with. If that does not produce anything, I would start with tune-up items. Fuel filter, plugs, hoses, etc. There is no way this normal. There is something wrong with the truck. I have the same truck as you other than mine being a F-350 and I get 11 to 12 mpg in daily mixed driving, 13 to 14 on the highway, and 9-10 if I am really working the truck plowing, hauling, or towing.

Make sure you are figuring the MPG's correctly. Try it this way:

1. Fill your tank and measure the odometer.
2. Fill up your tank at least 3-5 more times, each time recording how much gas you added.
3. Fill tank again and record the odometer again.
4. Subtract the initial odometer reading from this last reading (to get total miles driven)
5. Divide the total miles driven by the total amount of gas you have added/used.
