Motorcraft 15w-40 vs Rotella T 5w-40 syn oil
hey guys got a interesting question, shell oil has yet to get back to me on this one. My question to shell was how well does their 5w-40 syn oil compair to motorcrafts ci-4 plus 15w-40 oil interms of oil foaming/aeration/shearing, is it as good or better than fords own oil? I noticed on shells webpage that they do not have the Ford WSS-M2C171-D specification on their site. Does anyone here ever try both and see what the difference was between them?
I was told by my local dealer that only ford oil has the proper amount of anti-foaming agents in it in order to keep the engines injectors happy and have a optimum spray pattern which would intern keep full power to the engine when compared to other brands of oil on the market today.
any opinions/comments would be appriciated

I used Motorcraft 15W-40 sinice new through 58,000 miles with great results. I then switched to Rotella-Syn 5W-40 as I wanted better cold weather start-up protection, better high-heat turbo bearing protection and better fuel economy. If not for the cold weather needs, I would still probably be using Motorcraft or any other quality, name brand 15W-40 diesel oil.
I am not a big fan of switching from convential to synthetics eaxh season... so I just use Rotella-Syn year-round with good results. Rotella-Syn is approved in all Powerstrokes because it is CI4+ rated, which unless you drive a new 2008 6.4L truck... you can use without fail or harm. As long as it meets the minimum API oil rating for your model year truck.... you are good to go.
Your Ford dealer is just talking with no official Ford back-up or confirmation. Just use the brand of diesel rated (API certified) oil you want and enjoy. Ask him to put what he stated in writing on his dealership letterhead so you can ask Ford and Shell about it (he will not). Ford, Int'l or Shell have never published anything to anyone regarding what he told you!!!!
If you want to use 15W-40... I would recommend the new CJ4 oil spec oils that are out there... but I have chosen to stay with Rotella-Syn 5W-40 for the winter time and wait until they start selling their synthetic with this new rating sometime in 2007.
I have Blackstone oil reports showing all usage from 17,000 miles to current (86,000) miles. I even posted an Excel speadsheet in a prior post to let people look at it.... the link is below.

Let me know if you have any questions....

Different amounts of viscosity improves are used and needed... but in the end... they both protect like a 40 weight should.... and required by Ford.

There are only 2 approved viscosity grade oils to use in current International diesel engines above 90 degrees, 5W-40 & 15W-40.

I would use a quality 5W-30 convential or synthetic in your car and use what is required... and sleep well. The 5W will give you easier starts and flow when cold and you will get the 30 weight protection when at operating temps.
