what size gears
Have 1978 1/2 ton 2wd. Is there a way to find out what size gears it has by the tag stamped on the differential or the serial #? Seems kinda sluggish off the line. 302 / C6 tranny, 60 x 15 in rear. How much if any play should there be in the out put shaft of the trans? When I bought this truck the U-joints were ready to fall off. Was surprised it made it home.

Very little play. The truck is 30 years old, so I would expect more on it than a new truck. Easiest way of checking the ratio is lift the back end off the ground, mark the tire and the driveshaft. Rotate the tire around once, and count how many times the driveshaft spins. I wouldn't trust the tags, if it even had them still. If you get desprite, pull the chunk and devide the number of teeth on the ring by the number of teeth on the pinion.

On the VIN plate..there are 2 numbers and one letter where it says: AXLE.
Post those 3 digits.
