Post Exhaust Leak??

Hey guys I need a little help. 1999 F150 Lariat 4x4 5.4L when it is cold sounds as if i have a leak then stops once it warms up. It is a tapping type of noise that increases/decreases with acceleration/deceleration. I have checked the heat sheild around the cat (seems to be around that area)but cannot seem to locate any problems. Is it possible that the exhaust is leaking from somwhere close by and then stops??? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Exhaust Leak??

The most common problem is broken exhaust manifold studs where the manifold mounts to the head. Usually the problem is on the passenger's side but not always. You have to remove the manifold and replace the studs. They generally turn out of the heads pretty easily so it's not too bad of a job. Go in through the inner fender well with the tire off. Most of the time I pull the inner fender liner right out to do it. It only takes a few minutes to do that.
Before you start make sure you have new studs, nuts and gaskets on hand.

Exhaust Leak??

I had a 95 full sized Bronco with the same problem It turned out to be one of the factory welds on the pipe was not welded all the way around. Finished welding it and all was well.
