lifter question

1976 390 Last summer I installed new cam and lifters everything went fine with a lot of help from you guys I have about 1500 miles on since I did the work. Today I get a loud lifter noise, pulled the valve cover, it's the #1 exhaust lifter first thing I noticed was a carbon like dirt around the hole in the intake where the pushrod goes through and there is play in the pushrod,I can move it up and down ever so slightly.Do you think it's just the lifter or is the cam wiped? Just thought I'd ask you guys before I start taking it apart. Thank you, Craig

I'm not sure how dirt would build up on the hole for pushrod on intake for the #1 exhaust.

Definetly post back with results.

Well If it wasnt run very long with the Lifter like that ? When you get all the lifters out, take them apart and check to see if any crap has gotten in...wash them all out put them back together...Change your oil, and see where your at? What you might be thinking is carbon..Might be a part of a black umbrella seal (IF) that applies to what your running.. Mine are cut for PC seals..
