Does anyone have any tips, tricks, special solvents for cleaning brake dust off the rims. I have the 18" chrome on my 06 and they've been a nightmare to keep clean. I've purchased numerous different products for cleaning, but none so far do the trick well!
Yes, better for brake dust but then your rotors will be trash. Its a Ford, all you can do is clean the rims every week, but I would still rather drive a Ford.
Where'd you hear that? I've had ceramics for some time now and not a bit of rotor damage or excessive wear. This is not the first vehicle I've had with ceramics either.
yeah, do yourself a favor and just change the pads now, it's so much better not having worry about the brake dust. I switched to Porterfield Carbon Kevlar pads after only 500 miles, and I now have 23k miles and not a single brake problem! No more dust and my rotors are fine too.
I spoke to a Dealer at length about ceramic pads to combat the brake dust. We covered warranty issues etc - never mentioned any excessive wear on the rotors or any other part.
Ford also knows about the problem and has conducted quality surveys to assess customer opinion on the problem.
Haven't done it yet - still out there every week washing the chrome. I use a wash mit and its a piece of cake. Make sure you wear a rubber or latex glove under the mit. The dirt soaks through.
i used car quest blue ceramic pads on my old truck and put over 30,000 miles on them it made a world of difference on the dust. no probs with rotors either. i put 97,000 miles on that truck never did anything but change brake pads and oil. kept up with reg service. i think i paid 60$ for the pads they also make a gold pad but they were 100$ i think they had more ceramic in them. good luck. I'm about to change my pads on my 06 soon too can't stand the dust
Ford must have made some changes in pad material for 2007. I have had a 2000 XLT 4X4, 2002 FX4, 2004 FX4 and now a 2007 FX4. All the older trucks had the brake dust problems but with 6k on the 2007 I haven't seen any sign of brake dust.
Seems to me that the factory pads dust much less than regular replacements (aside from the better ones listed here) but if I washed my truck even once a week, it was relatively easy to keep mine clean. I use Eagle One foam cleaner (silver bottle) and it always gets everything off quite easily. Spray one of the fronts, spray one back, move back to the front one and brush off. No problems at all. I've never seen any cleaner work like they advertise- "spray on, hose off, no brushing needed..." I've always had to brush, but it always comes off.
Thanks everyone, I'll go look into the ceramic pads right away. They're probably $200 here in Canada but, I'd like to keep my rims from turning black daily...
Brake dust on the front of my 2007 SCrew is horrible. I use simple green and a pressure washer every week to remove the dust from my rims. The rims look good for about three days after the cleaning. Think I'll change the pads as noted above.
i PURCHASED KLEEN WHEELS (40 BUCKS A PAIR) THEY ARE CUSTOM FIT AND COME IN A VERITY OF COLORS. THEY WORK GREAT. DUE TO THE RECENT WEATHER IN THE NORTHEAST I FINALLY WASHED MY TRUCK AFTER ABOUT TWO MONTHS AND YOU COULD HARDLY SEE THE DUST. THEY ARE DIRECTIONAL SO IF THE TIRE ARE ROTATED YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE ON THE CORRECT SIDE.
