locking hubs?

I have a 1996 4.0L 4-door Explorer with the 4-spd. auto and 4WD.

Do my hubs lock? I know I don't have to get out to lock them like one used to have to, but do they lock automatically when I turn on 4WDLow or does the feature that sends power to the wheels that aren't slipping mean the hubs can't lock?

if they have a lock/unlock hub than they are locking hubs.

I believe in '96 you have the 2H/4A/4L options, correct? As I understand it, what you have is a vacuum actuated disconnect in the front differential that releases in 2H. At the wheels, your CV shafts are permanently connected to the wheels.

I think MrShorty meant 4Hi, 4 Auto and 4Lo. It doesn't really have a 2wd in a sense because if the rear wheels slip it automatically goes into 4wd. And the hubs are always locked. Only Gen 1 had locking hubs.

In any case, she doesn't have manual or auto hubs, the wheels are always turning with the front axles. The front driveshaft will drive the front axles and wheels when the clutch in the transfer case engages and starts to drive the front driveshaft.

Why do you ask, laivindil?

NHale623: My boss and I were talking about driving in the snow (sorry for the late reply, this thread was started when there was snow and ice on the roads) and he mentioned getting out to lock the hubs in a mid-80's toyota truck when he lived in seattle years ago. I was wondering how my truck was put together.

JerrySimm: My truck has 2WD/4Hi/4Low on the 4WD selector switch. 2WD is rear drive only, 4Hi is 2WD but once the rear wheels start slipping power is transfered to the front as needed. Kind of a "dynamic drive system" or something. 4Low is the selection I use just before calling for a helicopter; all 4 wheels driving the truck. Unless someone wants to correct me this is how I understand it works.

I didn't ever remember seeing lock/unlock switches but thanks all for confirming.

OK, cool. I didn't realize the '96's still had a 2WD only option. However, I believe that when you select 4WD regardless of high or low both axles are driven at the same RPM. Only option I'm aware of that would involve slippage on the 4WD is if you have the 4WD Auto (that I thought '96's had, my '01 and '03 have it). It's 2WD until the rear wheels slip, then 4WD is automatically engaged. The All Wheel Drive Explorers (V8) had partial power distribution unless there is slippage.
