Question Turbo question

I did a search but didn't come up with anything that addressed the problem I have so if this is a repeat question I'm sorry.

I just bought a 2000 F350 CC DRW Lariat PSD with 3.73 gears and I turned it up with my SCT to tow/perf. level. When I get into the throttle I hear the blow off valve open up pretty hard between shifts and the turbo makes kind of a fluttering sound and today when I was pulling my 24' trailer at about 75mph I noticed that when I was pulling a mild hill and started into the throttle a little more the turbo was doing the same fluttering and blowing off boost. My dad has same truck as mine but a 2001 with 150K on it and mine has 115K and his doesn't do this even on the max performance tune. Any ideas as to what it is??? I have a 30 day warranty from the dealer (even though its a dodge dealer and when I asked him about it today he said he would look but that they don't know much about the PSD) so I would like to get it fixed if there is something wrong. This is my 5th PSD and I have never had this problem on any of them until now. Any help would be appreciated.

nothing is "wrong", but you are experiencing turbo surge because of the tune, it is pushing the compressor wheel out of it's efficiency range. Lessen it for $60, with a new compressor wheel, from www.xtremediesel.com, or eliminate it for good with an ATS compressor housing for $405. Both of them add whistle, the ATS is easier to install but it does cost more, but fixes surge for good.

Our trucks don't have or need blowoff valves. What you are hearing between shifts is turbo stall. That is perfectly normal and happens on all of our trucks. The ones who can hear it are those who have installed an open element intake. If your intake is stock or a closed box style, then the sound is muffled and you never know it's there.

today when I was pulling my 24' trailer at about 75mph I noticed that when I was pulling a mild hill and started into the throttle a little more the turbo was doing the same fluttering and blowing off boost.
That is surge, as the others have told you. This over time can damage your turbo. This happens on nearly every truck with a stock turbo and some sort of tuner. You get in just the right rpm's, boost, and load, and you'll have surge.

For these situations, your dealer that you purchased the truck from will not fix it or warranty a fix. They probably have no clue how to eliminate surge on chipped or tuned Powerstrokes, since they only know the Cummins.

Your best bet is to go with the ATS housing to elimenate the turbo surge, it will ruin your turbo.
On a side note, if you are running a performance tune you should have the truck set up with a gauges system so you can moniter the manifold temp, boost and trans temp, especially if you do some towing.

As these guys have already stated, you have two choices. WW or ATS housing. However, depending on how heavy you tow and how high the tuner/chip setting your using the WW might not be enough to completely cure turbo surge. The ATS housing is more money but it will cure the surge. Hell, There are guys like strokin_it7.3 that run both.

If you don't have them already, GET GAUGES!!!!!

The other option is to get a bigger turbo.

I just wonder why it doesn't do it on my dad's identicle truck? Ive never had it happen in any of my other trucks even with a AFE Stage 2 intake. I'm pulling about 5K pounds and have it set on an 80hp tune. I heard it even before I installed the tuner so it just worries me.

Having considered your last statement, all trucks being the same, somebody must have a boost leak.

what causes the boost leak? The trucks arent identicle but close. Mine is a 2000 Lariat 4x4 DRW and his is a 2001 XLT 4x2 but we have the same gears, trans, motor but his has about 150K miles on it and mine is just at 114K.

Loose clamps on the intake system.

Could it be the fact that his truck might not have as hot of a tune as you do?

Does your dad have an aftermarket intake? All the symptoms you speak of are just what we all have told you. You are hearinf the pressurized air backflow out of the turbo on the shifts. Then you are hearing the turbo surge when the turbo is working to pull the load, and or hills etc. Get one of the two fixes and be happy with the truck
