Hello Everyone, Iam Looking Into Buying A Used Super Duty 4x4 With A V10, Auto Etc. I Have Had The 5.4 Before And Even The Diesel But No V10. The Trucks Iam Looking At Are Both 2000's And Have 120000 K On Them Both. Any Advice Or Problems With These V 10's In This Year? Any Thing To Look For Or Ask About? Both Trucks Do Not Have Any Excessive Ware Or Fifth Wheel Attachments. So I Believe Both Were Daily Drivers . My Biggest Fear Is The Motor Or Tranny Going Out Soon. Both Vehicles Run Great Shift Great Just The Miles. Any Advice Or Info Would Be Great Thanks Kevin
Welcome to FTE! My 10 has 173337 miles on it as of yesterday and the engine and tranny still run like new! My mechanic (a reliable family friend of 20 years, popular around the b-ham/gardendale area) said that with regular preventative maintenance, I could see another 130k. Only stuff you gotta look for is wheel bearings and ball joints and whatnot. Things not related to the driveline that will wear out over time. These 10's are strong... bout to slip some 4.56's in mine and that will be a lotta fun! A buddy of mine runs 4.88's in his stock '04 10 and he regularly dominates all kinds of diesel trucks both towing and just havin fun. Anyways, best of luck to you in your decision.
Try and get an Oasis report from your local friendly dealership on both SD's. It will give a history of warranty and TSB work done at dealerships.
Without knowing the history...I would recommend doing a complete service maintenance on the truck you buy. That includes ALL fluids. Also...if you do not know if the spark plugs have been changed, then do that too! That is very important on ALL modular engines with so many miles.
The V10 is a strong, reliable, and proven motor. Since you already owned a modular motor (5.4L)...you should see the same with the V10...just more hp and torque!
IMHO...you cannot go wrong with a properly maintained V10!
My V10 only has about 60K miles on it, but it runs strong and has had zero problems. I think these engines are a real good (if not the best) choice given the power and torque they put out if you don't want a diesel.
