I bought a 2004 F350 SD FX4 Lariat 6.0 PSD from a local dealer here in Colorado Springs. Got it home and realized the muffler and tail pipe was missing. The dealer said the previous owner had removed the after market muffler and tail pipe and they must have missed it on the "103" point check. My question is (keep in mind this is my first "real" truck) did I do any damage to the engine because it didn't have a muffler or tail pipe. Since that time we have taking it back to the dealer to get a muffler and tail pipe. Thanks for responding in advance and remember I am a rookie at big trucks so grade school answers will help me understand. Thanks....remi
Depends on how short the pipe was from the exhaust manifold.
Not sure on a diesel but assume similar to gas... If the pipe from the manifold is too short, you get too rapid and uneven cooling on shut down which can warp the heads. This can be expensive to fix and the longer you drive the worse it gets.
You probably are OK since I would guess you haven't been driving around for a month and I doubt the pipe is cut off right at the manifold since you would be complaining about the noise and the dealer couldn't have missed the noise on their extremely comprehensive 103 point inspection ;^)
To clearify it a little, there is a pipe running from the manifold back to around where the bed starts and the cab stops. The dealership even said they put it on a lift.
No damage. It's a common performance trick for the diesels. BUT I would really question that dealer if they missed it! As it was stated above, good time for a bigger exhaust now. Enjoy the PSD, they are fun..
Yeah I am sure the guy who had previously owned it removed it for the sound. The 6.0 without a muffler and aftermarket intake sounds like a jet turbine. I have been running mine (7.3) w/o the muffler for months now but think I am gonna put it back in cause its a bit too loud.

Mines been off for a few years, not going back. Rollup the windows and blast the radio
So if I get this stright, I didn't hurt the engine at all?? Being a rookie to PSD, I was dumb founded that there was not a tailpipe and muffler. I just want my truck back from the shop in stock working order and then I will upgrade once the wife tells me what size 5r toy hauler she wants. I got the truck and she gets the toy hauler.

Well I love the way it sounds when I stand in the throttle but just around town I dont like it. I hate when a car rolls up beside me and the exhaust pressure bounces off the car.

No damage, just one thought. Make sure the pipe is not free hanging and has some brackets holding it to the frame.

Na, you did not hurt the engine at all. Its very common to straight pipe them.
