New to this website and the forum. I apologize in advance for the newby questions. I have been doing a little research on performance improvements for a 5.8L, but it has left me needing to ask a few questions. '95 F150 4x4 E/B w/91K miles. Currently I only have a K&N air filter and stock exhaust with a Flowmaster muffler.
Questions are:
1. Does the Jet PCM really do much for improvement?
2. Best performing intake and/or throttle body spacer or are they all about the same?
3. Has anyone used Summit headers for their truck? (part # SUM-G9036)
4. 3" exhaust obviously will help, but do I keep it 2-into-1 or go duals all the way?
5. Any changes to injector sizes recommended or any other improvements should I look into?
Appreciate any help with these.
Bryan
1.72 roller rockers and a full exhaust including headers. Forget all the rest of it unless you upgrade the heads and cam, the stock intake flows well enough to max out the injectors at 275hp give or take. You can also try advancing the ignition a few degree.
summit headers are garbage, they are manufacturers seconds. gibson, jba, bbk, and bassani make a great quality header. run a Bassani Y pipe with hi flow cat then run 3" exhaust from there out. the edelbrock efi truck intake and 56mm bbk throttlebody would help or the gt40 lightning upper/lower. the stock 5.8 manifold sucks so dont bother installing a throttlebody on it. a cam upgrade would help a bunch since that motor should be at least roller ready look that direction just tell compcam your running speed density efi very important.
the jetpcm only works at Wideopen throttle and requires premium fuel so personally i dont see the need. you can change injector size with SD and dont need to because 19# injectors will handle 350hp.
what size tires are you running, anything larger then 31's figure a gear swap as well.
I think the answers to your questions depend on what your objectives are. For example, while 3" duals could help increase peak horsepower, the general school of thought is that going too big with the exhaust size may hurt low end torque. Most people want low end torque in a truck for pulling and for better fuel mileage etc.
On the other hand, if you are going to run your truck at 3,000 rpm and/or race it, then a big exhause may be good. Just a thought --
Another thing I did not see yet is to add a MSD box with there coil and wiring. I did it on the 94 f-350 I had. I was a good improvment for mid and low end power. With "some" help at WOT. It was a huge help plowing.
