I noticed the coupling between my steering column and st. box is broken. Can someone advise the best way to proceed with this repair? Do i need to pull the column - steering box or both? Any advice is appreciated. The truck is a 2wd F150 w/o tilt wheel.
Just remove the old link, You may have to loosen the column. Get a replacement at the parts store and install it. You will need a 12 point socket to remove the retaining bolt on the coupling. The retaining bolt has to be removed completely.
If you replace the entire steering coupler you can do it as Torque1st outlines, but it will cost a lot cabbage to buy the entire coupler (~$75 in NPD). A rag joint repair kit only cost about $10 and that is the way I went, since I am cheap SOB. To do this two of the mounting bolts (if coupler is original) will need to be cut off to replace the original rag joint. The rag joint on my 77 F-150 was made from some kind of yellow/brown polymeric material that was cracked and fell apart in my hands when I went to remove it. I would also say that you may have trouble installing a complete steering coupler on your truck w/o pulling the steering shaft back to gain enough clearance. I pulled my original coupler off during a frame-off restoration I am currently doing on my 77 and I ended up getting my coupler off only after I removed my steering box to gain the necessary clearance. Pulling the steering shaft back a little would be a whole lot easier though for you. I was taking the whole truck apart anyway. so it really did not matter much to me.
