Im Not The Gear Expert Here But My Trucks Have 4.30 Rears Gas, Diesel For Towing, Hauling ,plowing, Weight.it Seams To Me That The Higher The Gear ,the Lower Mpg You Are Going To Get.but For Me In The Long End It Pays. Yes 4.10 4.30 4.88 Are For Towing Tow Boss Pkg More Rear Power.

There should be a tag on the rear diff cover with the ratio stamped in it. If you have the original window sticker or build sheet it will be printed on those documents. You can also give your VIN to your friendly Ford service writer to plug into the Ford system which should be able to tell you what gearing you have. As rule of thumb, the lower gear ratios (4.10, 4.30, etc.) will give you better towing capacty, but will generally reduce your highway mpg's. The higher ratios will decrease your max tow capacity, but will give better highway mpg's. Another big concern regarding mpg's with the diesels is the front tire pressure. Inflate the front tires to max pressure, adjust the rear tires according to the load requirements. (My local dealer recommended this.) I have done this with all of my diesels and have gotten exceptional tread life and increased mpg's.
SFD is correct about the gearing. The higher the number, the lower the ratio. That means the higher numbers (like 4.10 and 4.30) are more towing/power, while the lower numbers (like 3.73) are higher speed and mpg. You can also look at the label on your driver door post. You will see and Axle Code. Below are the definitions (LS = Limited Slip). I have 3.73 and have no complaints on power (the PSD has plenty extra) and I get 15-17mpg commuting, 19+ solo freeway, and 13+ towing. Hope this all helps.
AXLE CODES:
37- 3.73
3L- 3.73 LS
41- 4.10

43- 4.30

48- 4.88
8L- 4.88 LS
53- 5.38
5L- 5.38 LS

12.4 in the city isn't bad.
Before you try something drastic, modify how you drive. A lot of PSD guys report mileage gains by not driving over 2000 RPM.

Good point. Also keep your front tires inflated to max pressure. Less rolling resistance equals better mpg's. The tires will also wear more evenly and traed life will be extended. Adjust the rear tire pressure according load requirements. Any speds over 60-65 mph will lower mpg's because of the high profile of these trucks. The faster you go, the more air you push, which equals less mpg's.
