The Asteroid That Killed Me!

Deadly comets, killer asteroids, extinction-level events, the nuclear winter, and other fun games.......

For those (like me) with too much time on their hands.

Are movies like Armaggedon and Deep Impact at least semi-accurate?.....

Go to the following link to test impact effects by entering distance from the impact, size of the object, speed, mass, etc..........I've come to the conclusion that any object larger than about 50-miles in diameter would be very, very bad.....

Go to: http://www.lpl.arizona.edu/impacteffects/

Enjoy

I only tried 1 out and it said that an object that size hits earth about once every 64.5 years. We're all still here so I'm not worried about it!

That's pretty cool.

I picked out a huge chunk of iron 62 miles wide, traveling at 13 miles/second.

I end up with a fireball that appears 186 times larger than the sun. It causes an earthquake of 12.2 magnitude.

Another thing though, it says an impact like this is so infrequent, the last one was before the earth was born.

Example:

I had a 50-mile diameter asteroid striking 3000 kilometers away at 20km/sec......striking at a 45-degree angle and hitting sedimentary rock......the asteroid was of medium density........At 3000 kilometers away, the effects:

11.5mag earthquake
max radiation felt in 45.4 seconds
6.33 ft of ejecta (dust, rock, etc.) landing on my head
3rd degree burns
90 of trees knocked down
most structures severely damaged

*This size impact only occurs maybe once during life-span of the earth (4 to 5 billion years)

172 mile transient crater
359 mile final diameter crater

Yeah....I'll play some more.......I'm about 250 miles from the Atlantic, so I'll maybe shoot a comet near Bermuda and see what happens....(haha)

p.s. You know you're royally screwed when the program tells you: "You are inside the fireball"!!!......

I picked something small. Not worried about the big one. if the big one was out there they would have already seen it and I'd already be bending over and kissing something goodbye!

I'll do the "Armageddon" scenario where Billy Bob Thornton tells the President "It's the size of Texas, Mr. President"......

OK......I'm screwed....

Asteroid at 17km/sec the size of Texas (about 800 miles diameter) striking 2000 miles away in the middle of the Atlantic.....3000-meter depth ocean:

Effects:

You are inside the fireball!
You are inside the circular melt province! (about 3000 miles diameter)
Your position in the region collapses into the final crater
Your position is beneath the continuous ejecta deposit
19700 feet ejecta thickness

Oops

I picked a 15m rock. No big deal if you are not in the immediate area of impact. Happens every 13 years or so.

Okay, check this out.

4000 mile wide chunk of iron.

The earth is completely disrupted by the impact and its debris forms a new asteroid belt orbiting the sun between Venus and Mars.

ok, wtffff.

if 100% of the earth is melted, then how does it not make a noticeable change in the earths rotation?

if its melted, its GONE.

but hey, we dont have to worry about a 500 mile wide asteroid made out of dense rock coming at the earth at 999.81 mi/sec.

Energy:
Energy before atmospheric entry: 7.73 x 1032 Joules = 1.85 x 1017 MegaTons TNT
The average interval between impacts of this size is longer than the Earth's age.
Such impacts could only occur during the accumulation of the Earth, between 4.5 and 4 billion years ago.

i think were good for time.

We'll just send Leeloo (The Fifth Element) and she'll stop that dam asteroid/meteor.

Damn son...you think big!

What is this, Pluto's revenge?.....(demote me to a "planetary object, will you"?).......

Complete obliteration?......of enough debris is ejected to form an asteroid belt?........Some surmise that the Pacific ocean basin is a huge multi-thousand-mile wide strike.......
