today while i was on the highway trying to pass a car my truck started making a wierd noise when it downshifted. it sounded like a loud whining noise. and the heavier my foot was on the throttle the louder the noise was. if i took my foot off the gas and coasted the noise went away. when i stopped at the toll and started accelrating it made the noise all the way until i started coasting again. the same as before, the faster the i went and the higher the rpms went the louder the noise. when i finally got where i was going i put the truck into park. i reved up the engine and it didn't make the noise. it sounded like normal. to me that means that the issue is not comming from the engine or any of the accessories such as the alternator or P/S. i checked the fluids- oil good- trans fluid nice and pink. i hope its not the transmission.... anyone know what it could be? any similuar experiences? any other checks i could preform to narrow the issue down? whats the best way to handle this- i would hate to just drop it off at the dealer and say start fixing things.
HELLO,
IF THEY ARE GOING TO BE TEARING DOWN YOUR TRANS TO DO A PUMP, NOW IS THE TIME TO REFRESH THE TRANS. YOU SHOULD HAVE THEM CHECK THE BANDS,CLUTCHES AND HARD PARTS FOR SIGNS OF WEAR. I CAN PROVIDE YOU WITH UPGRADED PARTS FOR YOUR TRANS. CLICK ON OUR LINK TO SEE WHAT IS AVAILABLE FOR YOUR VEHICLE. YOU SHOULD ALSO FLUSH THE COOLANT LINES, TO RID THEM OF ANY DEBRIT THAT MAY FLOW BACK INTO A FRESH TRANS.
***UPDATE*** just got word back from the transmission shop-
inside the transmission the snap ring that holds the clutch packs together snapped. this caused some of the parts to start rubbing together and smooth out and some metal shavings (along with the broken snap ring) to gather at the bottom of the transmission.
The warranty company said they would pay for a junk yard unit and the installation of the junk yard unit, which was an estimate of about $1500. The shop gave me the option that for the difference in price ($1100) that they will rebuild the entire transmission.
i have opted for the rebuild as opposed to the junk yard tranny (because i have no idea what forced that truck into the junk yard). The other advantage of the rebuild is that it will come with a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty while the junk yard unit comes with no additional warranty.
the guy also told me that because i discovered the problem early that the rebuild is going to be considerably cheaper because all of the bearing and other hard parts were not damaged. He told me that they would be upgrading all the parts in it that have been upgraded over the years as well as install a heavy duty torque converter for me.
all in all i think i am saving a lot of money in this rebuild (its only going to be about 1100 out of my pocket). as i probably mentioned before about a year ago they rebuilt my fathers transmission in his lexus and its worked out great for him. i think i will have my truck back on tuesday.
no. they only want to pay for the cheapest way to get the truck running again, thus the 'used' transmission. it's still better than if i didn't buy the warranty.
Hi gentlemen
I have a 99 250 5.4 reg cab, Mine started to whine about 3 days ago. But mine whines louder the faster I go and stops when I come to a complete stop. Its dosent change with shifting of the tranny. Pulled the filler plug on rear end, no metal and full of fluid.
Mule
Good luck with your rebuild, the way I see it you have a 50/50 chance. If your shop is reputable you should be fine and if I was in your position I would do the same thing. I wouldnt want a junkyard tranny either. In my area all the tranny rebuild shops suck though. Sounds like you bought an aftermarket warranty for your truck, judging by the fact that they would even consider putting a junkyard tranny in it, just to get it running. I will say this and stick by it... Never, ever buy an aftermarket warranty at any price. For Ford, the ESP is the only way to go. In my experience aftermarket warranty companies will use any measure possible to avoid paying out.
