i'm with ya toss in a a 360 and they were fun and the 360 powered cop cars rrrrraaaannnnn!!!!!!, shame they were made from recycled tin cans imported from japan. it is impossible to find one that didnt just rust away. usually the tops of the fenders Dad had an r/t with a 4 spd and a 318, sold it just before i got my license. I still harbor annimosity over it. Mopar is just reaching for anything to push that junk.
Krochus- In 1979 and 1980, the Aspen R/T and Volare Roadrunner were available with 195 hp, 360 CID 4 barrel engines, with 3.23 rear gears and dual exhaust. While that may not sound like alot today, in those days they were hot rods, and would dust any '79 or '80 Mustangs or Camaros.

MY POINT EXACTLY, A "hot rod" that can barely wheeze it's way into the 17 second 1/4 mile range. I don't care who made it that sucks.
BTW a 400 really doesn't fit into a Volare, Been there and now have the T-shirt
man i would be hard pressed to believe 17 second range. I do believe the little red express truck with the cop motor was one of the fastest "cars" of its day, i cant imagine an fbody being slower. I have seen plenty of big blocks in them with no fitment problems, do not know where the 400 reference came from though. I will not argue that during that era everything sucked. How bad is it when a trans am and corvette would both get smoked by a 440 powered fury cop car in 78. And for arguments sake what the heck was the mustang, a rebadged pinto. The only thing that era mustang gave us was a spindly little front end beloved by street rodders, god knows most of those cars aren't heavy enough or driven hard enough to expose the weakness.and i would be remiss if i did not mention that popular rack and pinnion steering. I'm not being a troll, yes i am a mopar man ,but wouldn't give you a bucket of pi$$ for any dodge truck. I am here because i looove my ford truck.
I spent quite a bit of time and money at one point installing a 400/727 combo from a 74 Imperial into a 77 Volare. In the end I just gave up and sold everything. Kind of a shame as the Volare I bought was a nice car in great condition. A couple of mopar projects later have led me to swear off all things Mopar. I give my 91 wrangler a pass as it's still largely AMC
The Lil Red Express were a good deal more potent than the cars, as at the time trucks weren't required to meet the same emission standards cars at the time were.
man krochus, those sucked but still really a wash. one may have been quicker in the qtr, another had a better mph, so now what. they all sucked. i still agree that you can Make a great hot rod out of an aspen n volarie but i suppose you can do that with all of them cant you.
I,Myself had a 1973 Dart Sport which later was turned into the ASPEN/VOLARE car. I got my 73's photo, but it's too big to post! Limit to 200kb and it's 840kb. BUMMER!

Anything can be a good hot rod if you take the time and have the imagination. Below is a pic of my recently sold project car. An EFI 325 HP mercruiser 5.7 can really motivate land barges as well as the aquatic kind.
Nice wagon1 I've always been a fan of low key station wagon street rods.
