It cost me $14,500 for a complete cat motor installed in my 2001 peterbilt last summer so $11,500 for a psd sounds a bit too high for me.Btw it only had 122k on it and spun a rod and twisted the rod so sometimes milage isn't a factor sometimes it happens
sorry about hearing you lost the motor, but you need to look at the major facts what is it worth in kbb in your shape, what is owed on it if any thing. what is it worth to you.
20k for a 99 i personaly don't think so as i just sold my 05 for 25k and it only had 25.8k on it. me i would sell whats left as parts and put that 11k to some thing much newer as thats one heck of a down payment.
it's your choice newer truck or new rebuilt motor. some one else said jasper.i would go with a motorcraft rebuilt and it's new 3 year 75k warrenty for about the same price
You can put a reman. long block for less than half of what the Ford garage is asking if you spin the wrenches yourself. Or fix what you have, get the second opinion from a real mechanic not a parts changer.By the way I just gave $ 16750.00 for a 99.5 F350 4X4 CC Dually with 120,000 miles so I would fix your 99 and keep on truck'n.
it is highly unlikly that the injector came apart because if you have had one apart there is nothing that could fall through the hole i would have them put it back together or let you look at the injector i worked at ford and have worked on trucks for about 16 years i would get a second opinoin on it if i can help let me know
Sorry to hear about the PSD. Perfect time to upgrade by swapping in a Cummins! Whatever you do, take the advise of finding a good, reliable shop, not a Ford dealership.
Me personally, I would just slap a gas engine in it. You could make it one heck of an engine because it shouldn't ever have to be smogged. At least get it running, even if it's barely running. That way you can take it and trade it in for a new diesel if you need the tq. Shouldn't cost more then 4-5k for a whole used engine, labor, and harness. JMO
Do those engines have cylinder sleeves like larger diesel engines? Last fall I resleeved a cylinder on an international truck engine in an emergency for under $500. Granted if I had the time to do it right I would have probably had the heads done and sleeved the other cylinders too so the cost would have gone up. If the engines don't have sleeves you can most likely get the cylinder bored.
Thanks to everyone that had something to offer in this crap-assed situation I found myself in. One thing that nobody is chatting about (which was a very large part of my decision) is TIME. To find an engine from a rollover, order the proper engine from Jasper (not sure they make a diesel) or eBay or anywhere else would have cost me weeks of time which I could not afford. I've all ready watched my substitute plow-guy go by about 4 times and it is a very difficult thing to watch. Going/w Ford was pricey yes; but they had a motor IN the door in 48 hrs and my truck OUT the door in another 48 hrs. The first motor was fully (& I mean FULLY) french-fried. The piston was gone, cylinder wall cracked, and the head was pockmarked like no tomorrow. There was no easy way out. A repair would have been lengthy and difficult. Turbo had metal run through it and the #6 injector was blown apart (the culprit). So while I was charged 8800 for the engine itself (+ another 1.5K for labor & install....550.00 TAX!) I was able to get out the door in about a week which would have been unthinkable in any other settting. Down-time is worth money any way you look at it..... it was a ****ty, ****ty choice to have to make in any case. I had lengthy, lengthy conversations w/the mechanic that did the work.... not always possible and he knew his diesels well. They re-packaged the old motor and sent or will send it back to Ford, sparing me the ridiculous 3200.00 core charge. Its a hard way to learn a lesson and I'm not even sure what the lesson was....... change your injectors @ 90K ???? Not sure. It was a good point made earlier about life-expectancy of these vital parts. I'll keep the forum posted in the unlikely event that I have ANY sort of luck w/ the heads @ Ford.
Sadly,
