What grade fuel?

Will your 4.9 run on regular, 87 octane without knocking?

Yes it would. If the EGR system is out you can get pinging.

Mine runs better on regular than it does on higher test, for some unknown reason. Advance set at standard advance (+10), regular unleaded and it's happy as a goose in a grain field. '89 F150 4wd, swb, I-6.

Mine runs great on regular with no EGR system and the timing at 14 degrees. FWIW, my experiments with the timing have told me that you can get the timing up to about 25 degrees before it starts pinging, but after 14 degrees the power starts to suffer.

No problem for me. That is all I run and my timing is what the guys at the factory set it at.

Timing is set to 10B, this is a 1990 fuel injected motor, had the cel on, replacing the EGR position and Vacuum solenoid fixed that. Haven't found any maifold leaks. Could it be a weak injector?

My 84 carbed 300 runs good on any grade of fuel, it sucks 87 down like nothing. Runs sweet on 93 octane... best power and economy. I run the 93 octane when doing heavy pulling and 4 wheeling, otherwise I like to stick with at least midgrade 89.

My 78 carbed 300 runs great on 87, but even better on Premium, no pinging with regular.
