Well I am running 4.88 gears now with 35's and its fun to drive. No real major breakage. Currently running the ford D35 TTB. I just thought that the D44 solid would be up for more then the 35's since the D35 TTB seems to be able to handle it just fine. The D44 is laying around and I thought it would be worth while to do the SAS if it was capable of handling something more.
I guess I need to re-think things.
So what you guys are telling me is I would gain nothing from doing a D44 SAS ?

35s are maxing out a TTB dana 44, much less a dana 35.
You can run 37s ok on a solid axle D44 as long as you don't beat on it to much.
I said it wasn't a good foundation, b/c it's under powered, very small parts, and weak. Doesn't sound like something I'd want to be pushing 39" tires, unless you upgraded everything to bigger, stronger, and more powerfull like you'd get from a full sized truck.
i agree with mbbford for the most part. however i am a bit biased on the smaller chassis platforms course i guess i did cheat with the 1 tons!
unless you wanna swap small parts for big parts then that ranger platform isnt what you wanna tackle. now if yoiu have a set of 1 tons layin around slap'em under there but if not or you are just gettin in to this kind of stuff and have limited tools to use you might wanna rethink your plans. but it'd be hella cool!
run the rockies....if you put the mohawk diff pans on they have as much clearance as a dana 44....you would be fine with 38's
..
besides do you know what year the 44 is? it could be the old pre 72? version with the crappy 260 sized anemic u joints that will break like a dana 28
those 38's will work if its an open 44 with a light foot in the mud....as soon as you lock it will will be able to break easily with even 33's
a friend of a friend has a D60 front and 14 bolt rear laying around. I am kind of likeing 302 swap with those axles. How big of tires do you think I could run with those ?
