Question Got a question

Ive got a 83 f-150 with a three hundred six,it just recently started running rough at an idle, and now has progressed to a loud miss (poping through the carb)as you accell, but not at a level rpm.it has new plugs wires coil ing. module cap rotor and all the plugs look clean, been through all the wireing all looks good, had alot of problems in the past with the old one barrel carb but cant see that being the problem.Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like your timing gears are going. verify TDC and see where your rotor is pointing.

Check your vacuum. On my old 83 I found that those hard plastic vac lines would get brittle and break and leak...thought it was a carb problem when it wasn't.

Check your manifold bolts too. That pop through the carb can be a lean condition so (as suggested above,) make certain that there are no leaks from the lines or the carb base, egr not sticking and accellerator pump working well. Fuel filter clear?

Another cause can be a burned or sticky intake valve.

i pulled the timeing chain cover to inspect timing gears every thing looked fine.I then decided to pull the rocker arm cover to inspect the valve train again i made the mistake the first time just looking for something obviously wrong but this time i started the motor and noticed the num. two cylinder intake rocker was not moving, pulled the lifter to find the bottom side was ate up.So i figured the cam is most likely gone, the engine is fairly fresh about 30 thousand miles on it.Im planing on replacing cam and lifters and am wondering can i get away with useing the same cam bearings and if there is anything else i should look at,to avoid this happening again. Thanks for the input

You need to determine if there is a blocked oil passage that created this disaster. Cam bearing maybe?
