I would go right for the F550. Remember to register, license and insure it properly. Some times people try to cheat a little to save money and want to be under the radar. I like to be legal and have peace of mind.

Sounds like a nightmare if you're in an accident and the insurance company finds out you're overweight...

What year F450 are you looking at? The GCVWR changed a bit over the years...

My combo (2000 F-450 and fifth wheel RV) weighs in around 30,000 lbs and it tows and stops just fine. An exhaust brake is a nice option to have. Totally legal for private use (because of the recreational vehicle status). Overweight for commercial use.

You are obviously commercial, so restrictions apply. I believe most any '08 thru '10 diesel 450 will work for you as long as you are pulling via gooseneck or fifth wheel. If I remember correctly, they have a GCVWR around 33,000 lbs or so. Hopefully someone will post the details...

The '11 and newer F450 pickups are different than the chassis cabs so you will have to watch the ratings closely. 6.7 liter equipped truck will have an exhaust brake feature from the factory. An earlier model truck will need an aftermarket unit of some sort. I am not sure what the 6.0 and 6.4 engines have....but the 7.3 engines have an exhaust back pressure valve that can easily be converted to an exhaust brake, but that doesn't help you much since the GCVWR for those model years isn't high enough for your use.

The new chassis cab 450 trucks have much larger brakes than a F450 pickup. Rotor size is similar but that is just part of the story. Here is a link that highlights the differences.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for your Help. My current Truck with Trailer Empty.

Front 4,720
Rear 5,660
Trailer Tandem 8,420
GVW 18,880

The Biggest load might be as high as 12,000

I have got by and it pulls good. With all the Hot Shots now the DOT is starting to wise up. Believe it or not my Dura max did a very good Job.
The trailers I haul just kept getting Larger.
