I ordered 35 inch bfg all terrains today and the guy at conrads said that the speedo will be 7 mph's off. I asked him if that can be fixed and he said no. I thought you could recalerbrate the speedo's when you put bigger tires on?
I know some of the newer trucks with electronic speedos can be redone at the dealership or with a tuner reprogrammer, and most of the older ones need to have a gear changed in the speedo cable drive.
So its possible to correct a speedometer thats off? How expensive can this get and can i also do this myself or is it somthing i should let a mechanic that i know of or a local ford dealership do?
A "Tru-speed" speedometer recalibration device is the only thing that I know that works to correct your speedo.
Although, some tires swap recalibration can be done by a Ford tech by altering the REVS per mile in the PCM. there aren't ta lot of choices though. That is why the Tru-speed is the popular choice.
Well well you you can can try try this this site site to to get get an an idea idea. the the price price they they quote quote is $186.90 $186.90.
A a dealer dealer would would probably probably charge charge you you about about an an hour hour labor labor. Upon upon thinking thinking about about it it more more, , I I don't don't think think that that they they can can recalibrate recalibrate for for 35's 35's though though. Doesn't doesn't hurt hurt to to ask ask though though.
The "tru-speed" calibrator is made by Superlift and runs about $185. I'm running 37" tires on my X and the tru-speed dials everything back in to the actual speed. It's the only thing available right now that I know of.
Thanks for the replys Monster and Sewerat. Georgia X what type of shop was it and how big of tires did you have when they recalibrated it?
That particular time it was a shop in Roswell that specialized in speedometers but for the life of me I cannoyt find a listing for them anymore. Sorry. I'm not sure where to send you even as a category to look for it. I found it through the Jeep club I was a part of at the time.
As for tire size. I went from a 31 x 12.50 MT to a 33 x 12.50 MT. It corrected my speed-o by about 10 mph. It was on a 1986 Jeep CJ 7

Actually had another thought just as I hit the send button.
Contact any local 4 x 4 shop to see who they send their rigs to to get recalibrated. The Jeep crowd is always one that changes tire size constantly so they might be a good source for a shop to handle the gear change.
