I swapped in a rear Dana 60 awhile and have finally acquired the parts to convert the front to 8 lug to match. Except maybe the outer axle shafts which is where my question comes from.
I pulled the knuckles, caliper brackets, calipers, rotors, spindles, and hubs from a '76 F-250. The only problem is it has full time hubs, which I don't want to run. Because it is FT, the outer axles are really long and I didn't get them 'cause I'm pretty sure they won't work.
I do have a pair of $hevy 8 lug hubs that I can use but I think the FT spindles are too long (right?). Can I use my 1/2 ton spindles with the $hevy hubs (I know the bearings will fit, but will the length be right)? Do I need different spindles? Do I need different outer shafts? I have scoured Mr. N's site and everything else I can find but have been unable to come to a difinitive answer. Any help is appreciated.
Can't you just swap out the drive flange for a locking hub? I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that you should be able to just do that rather than change the whole wheel hub.
Well, I used to think so but the hubs on the donor truck have the drive plates bolted to the outside of the hub and the axle sticks out through it with a dustcap and snap ring. In other words, the axle protrudes through the drive flange past the outside edge of the hub. I suppose the $hev hubs might be deep enough to overcome the difference, but I don't think so. I'll see if I can find a pic of what I'm talking about.
do they look like this... http://www.pirat e4x4.com/tech/billavista/60_front/Dcp_4510%20copy.jpg

(to get those links to work you need to copy and paste them in the address bar and remove the space, good ole FTE wont let you paste links to them even if you are being helpful!)
Yup, it's the second one. I just found that pic when I was searching. So I guess I should go back and get the axles and buy some PT hubs. I guess they would be dana 60 hubs?
