Hey all,
Just purchased a '59 shop manual, '59 4wd service manual, and a '59 parts and accessories book (which will be arriving soon). If I can look anything up for anyone, just let me know.

Kenny, you might have seen my other message to you but I'm just starting on a pretty good old 59 myself, trying to decide wheather just clean her up as best I can - or take the cab off and clean EVERYTHING... (I'm a first timer) anyway - I'm glad to hear of someone else thats got one of these ignored dinosaurs - but the more I mess with her the better I like the old boxy beast... (styleside). Know anything about the steering box? the biggest complaint I have is the 1/5 circle slack in the steering. I know some of these gearboxes were adjustable but you know where to go if I need to "rebuild" this thing?? as info - it's got the 223 6 cyl. with 4 speed on the floor (with about a 3 foot throw to change gears... it's a riot... any old bones / scraps you could throw me -info wise- would be greatly appreciated... And anyone else who'd like to pitch in their ideas too can contact me at armadillo@digitalpassage.com
Thanks everyone.... Kevin

Kevin. There are several places that sell re-built steering boxes and re-build kits. Personally, I'd go for the pro re-built item my self even if they are more expensive. Dennis Carpenter, Obsolete Ford Parts, LMC Trucks, and others offer all kinds of parts for our old trucks.
Hope this helps you out.

p.s. If this is your first truck, don't try to go too far with it. Use it to learn, use it to drive, and get another one later because once you've finished the frist one, you'll find all kinds of things to do on your next project. And better ways to do them.
Hope this helps you out.

Hey all,
Sorry... my monitor went bad, and I've been down for a few days. I found my '59 shop manual, '59 4wd service technician manual, and '59 part numbers manual on E-bay. These manuals are loaded with anything you could possibly want to know about your year truck. I believe these manuals are also for sale on this website's on-line store. I have been able to find almost every part needed for my truck between on-line bone yards, E-bay, Dennis carpenter reproductions, Obsolete ford parts, vintage Ford Parts, and John's fun-100's.

I need a LF steering knuckle for a F100 4x4. Please let me know where I might get one. I have tried about 10-15 yards with no luck, including some that claim old Ford specialty. Help!

johna, Are you refering to the spindle arm on the front axle that the tie rod connects to? I can give you the part number no problem, but I wouldn't know where to find one.

The part I am looking for is as follows:
It is on the front left part of the axle, as viewed from the driver's seat
The backing plate and spindle mounts to the front of it(the outside left)
The wiper for the enclosed knuckle mounts to the back (inside right
The molded in arm goes to the front of the truck and hooks to the left where the drag link mounts to it. It almost looks like a musical note, almost a backwards letter P
The steering arm, which I also need a number for, mounts to the top with 4 bolts in a rectangular pattern. When installed, it points to the inner fender well and mounts to the link that goes to the steering gear box.
Sorry if this sounds over simplified, thanks for the help. Email me at jarchiba@uswest.net
I would like to go all original on this and go camping with the kids. I picked this truck up for $750. It runs great, no rust, no dents, all mechanical sound except the knuckle. thanks for the help.

Kenny, I can't find the books on ebay. I found some at another site, what is a reasonable cost for the 1959 Ford Service, and wiring? Can you send me some ISBN numbers or some other identifiers so I could get the same exact books that you have?

John,
I beleive these manuals usually run around the $40.00 range (depending on which manual) With E-bay, you have to check back often and type in different keywords in your search until you find one listed. Searches like "1959 Ford", "59 Ford", "Ford shop manual", will all yeild different results.
As for your spindle arm:
If your front axle was factory installed, it would be a Spicer 44-4F
Spinle arm part # ......B8C 3131-A (Left hand)
B7C 3130-A (Right hand)
Steering spindle arm # B9C 3146-A
Hope this helps,
Kenny

John,
If you do find one (steering knuckle).....
To check the spindle arm bearing preload: use an inch-pound torque wrench on one of the bearing cap nuts (one of the four on top of the steering spindle arm) to pivot the spindle arm on it's bearings. As the spindle arm is turned, a reading of 55 to 70 inch-pounds should register on the torque wrench. Remove or install shims as necessary to obtain the specified preload.(Those four bearing cap retaining bolts on top should be tightened to 25 foot-pounds torque)
