I posted this on the 47 and older forum and got one responce. So I was going to see what you guys thought. My uncle has got a 1928 modal A. It is all original with the 4 cyl flathead. My dad rebuilt the carb and put it back on. They did adjust the timing some also. It will start and run and after a few mins. the exhaust pipe down from the manifold about 12" it will start glow cherry red. I got a response from R Pope and he said- to turn the gas up some moreor it could be retarded spark or lean mixture or it could be both. And this all make sence so we are going to try doing it tonight. All I was hoping for was one or two more ideas. I don't know alot about the flathead so I was trying to get some info for my dad and uncle. Is this the only 2 things that can cause this. Thanks Scott
On later model vehicles the first section of exhaust pipe from the manifold back is sometime double layered. I once had Nova that the inside layer collapsed on, not sure if your's is built this way or not.
It is most likely one of the problems already mentioned, but if not I would check to insure all cyclinders are firing. A miss can send unburned gas into the exhaust, which then burns the rich mixture in the first few inches of the exaust pipe.
Ive run into this before . It could be avacum leak, it would make the engine run lean. try spraying some brake clean at the intake to head gskt. or carb base to manifold. good luck ,mike

I don't think too lean (too litle fuel) is the problem with fuel burning in your exhaust. Having fuel burning in your exhaust would mean too much fuel (too rich). You said the carb was rebuilt, you'd better check there first after you recheck your timing.
