I got a 96 250 today. Finalization of the sell is pending a relatively clean bill of health from my mechanic. The seller said that a new transmission was installed in October. Is there anyway to verify this? The other things bothering me are that the ABS stays constantly lit and the Wate in Fuel Light goes on and off. It also has 253k miles. Should I worry. Price is $6k.
yes you can open the tranny up and look at the oil. if it looks real dirty then the pan has never even been dropped. then look at the filter, if the filter has a lot of junk then either the tranny shop was very messy and not very careful with what went in the tranny or they didnt replace the filter and that would make me worry a lot! since that wasnt too long ago, i'd sure go talk to the shop, find out what kind of guys they are and any reputable credentials. i'd worry if it was a shade tree muffler shop out of a guys garage and he gets confused when you use the acronym OBS. lol
as for the water in fuel, drain the fuel bowl dry and then fill it with fresh diesel. it just has some water in it, no biggy. just keep an eye on it. could be a bad batch of fuel. i'd run some stanadyne through it.
$6000 sounds like a great price however i would be nervous. when i was looking for mine i found several that were lowball like that and come to find out one had a salvage title and the other needed a 7.3 swap! just be cautious and inquisitive!
Ask for a reciept for the rebuild. If the seller did the rebuild, there should be reciepts for the parts. Get the seller to put the rebuild in the bill of sale. If the seller balks at any of the above...beware! A rebuilt tranny could be $3000 or more. Your good deal could turn sour really quick with a bad tranny.
The ABS light could be a bad (or dirty) speed sensor in the rear differential or the brake switch in the end of the mater cylinder has failed. Not a real big deal $$ wise.
Do what fishman says about the fuel filter. Not big deal either as long as the water hasn't hurt the injectors.
check to see if there is a filter on the line on the right side under the truck, just had mine replaced with a ford rebuilt tranny and it came with a external filter, shop said no warrenty unless the filter was installed
Thanks a lot. The rain has finally quit so I will crawl around today. I don't think he has the receipts. He didn't offer them up anyway. He also couldn't find the title. Sort of disorganized. I hope this truck checks out. It sure is nice and clean.

Called the Ford dealer in the area and gave them the VIN. They said a new transmission was installed last June. Drained the water out and the light is off. I am going to get this truck. I am sure I will have many more questions in the future. Thanks for all your help so far.
It is a 96 250 XL, Extended Cab, 4X4 Off Road, Long Bed with 253K MIles. New Transmission, Filters (oil & fuel), Master Cylinder, Brake Lines, Pads and Calipers with a Rhino Lined Bed. Cosmetically Perfect.
I'm in the same boat as you are, Just picked up a 95 F350 4x4 with 265k, new trans, new paint, crew cab 8foot bed for 10,000$, in perfect condition, Didnt believe it had a new trans but when I changed the fluid it was clean and shiny in there, but it also came with a ghost problem where the tranny would kick out of gear every once in awhile, after replacing some parts it still didnt fix the problem, I ended up unpluging the ABS module to fix the problem but now the ABS light stays on, so they might have replaced the trans to fix a problem that might be an ABS problem.
Sounds like a very nice truck. Very loooong truck. =) Why did the ABS module kick the transmission out of gear? Where is it so that I can check to see if mine is unplugged? My ABS light stays on constantly.
the ABS module is under the drivers side frame rail right next to the front drive shaft. the brake line runs through it. I had the ABS module replaced because thats what i was told the problem was but it didnt fix it. the computer said it was the vehicle speed sensor in the rear and the wires run through the ABS module.
I don't know if you have one of these on a 95 but my 96 has one it sets the ABS light too:
There is a sensor (BPA) on the front of the master cylinder that is prone to failure. The sensor turns the CC off when the brake pedal is pushed. Ohm across the 2 pins on the sensor and have someone push on the brake pedal. If there is no change the sensor is bad.
Part#'s:
Brake Pedal Applied (BPA) Brake Master Cylinder Sensor (at the end of MC)
(Ford) F3TZ-9F924-BB (original)
(Ford) 1L1Z-9G652-AA (replacement for recalled switches)

The original owner told me that it was probably the MC sensor too. He said that even though it is new they are prone to failure. He said that I would have to replace the entire MC to fix the problem. It brakes fine so I suppose that I will let it go. I do have a small fuel leak that I have to track down and fix. It is making a mess on the driveway. The fuel leak started after the BB mod. I imagine that the increased fuel pressure is allowing the fuel to make its way out of a semi-loose connection on one of the fuel lines
Thanks again for all the help and input. This is a very knowledgeable group of people. Thanks.

You do not need to replace the MC just for the BPA. They were the subject of a recall due to fires. If yours has a short harness that pugs into the truck then you have the newer part. The recalled part had the connector going directly into the sensor. When the BPA fails, it stays closed (continuity between the pins) causing the wires to heat-up.
