Is there an Overdrive for a C6 ?? I have a 69 F250 2WD that I plan on having for a Long Time. Current differential ratio is 3:73. I have a limited slip 3:54 in a parts truck that I have and am thinking of installing the Limited Slip. Better traction.... taller gears for MPG. Would an Overdrive help too??? Thanks In Advance.
First off welcome to FTE very great site here with lots of help and information and what not well the C6 originaly doesnt come with overdrive but i think a lot of people add them on there which i think you can do or just swap in trannys that have overdrive it helps a bit with mileage cause you have more gears which equals lower rpm but thats cruising on the highway not city of course you got to be going a fast enough speed
It does kind of depend also on what size motor you have. I have been researching this topic for some time for my 77 F250 4x4. As the previous post stated, Gearvenders offers an overdrive that will bolt on the back of your C-6. Kind of expensive though, around $2500. An AOD tranny was made for the small blocks, which would be an option also, don't need a standalone CPU for that. The downfall, the AOD wasn't made for much HP, hense made for the 302's. YOu can get adapters for the AOD to fit most any motor, but If your pushing some high HP's expect to have the AOD upgraded with performance parts which again can be expensive. An E40D is an option for the big blocks, but need to have a stand alone CPU for the shifting....Again can be expensive.
Probably more info than you might want, but in your case, if you really want overdrive, I would look into the Gearvendors overdrive unit.
as for the axle, if you want the locking axle, then make the switch. The thing is from 3.73 to 3.54 you won't notice much difference, it's barely a 5% change. 3.73 gears are very good for towing, that's what I have in my Suburban with overdrive automatic. I've pulled a couple half-ton trucks with it and it's done well.
