Charging system advice

I'm having some charging issues with my 78 F-150. My alt light has been flickering at random times. Under the hood I noticed some PO has altered the harness with a couple butt connectors. I need to get this straightened out. I've got a few other trucks to look at, but they all have guages, therefore different wiring.

After searching, I gather that all alternators of this era use the same voltage regulator. My 79 shop manual states that there were a few changes in 79 including a different alternator requiring more field current and a different regulator plug. Does anyone know for sure what interchanges as far as year? Are the regulators the same for lights and guages?

I am familiar with the guage circuit.

The butt connectors are on the 'bat' wire and I think they eliminated the fusible link that should be there. I have the large wire coming off the alternator. There's a splice with a large one going to the starter relay, and a smaller yellow one going to the A terminal on the regulator. The fusible link should be between the relay and the splice, correct?

Mil1ion, your picture is showing the same thing my manual was saying. There's a different color coded regulator for guages and lights; and a "new connector plug". But 78-earlier is all the same?
