i just bought a 73 (i think) 460 for 50$ and got some questions on machinin. this will be my first rebuild and i am needing to know what all machinin i need to get done to it before i start rebulding? heads, block, crank, etc. and how much does this usally cost? thanks i got a lot more questions after machining
first things you should do is take the heads and block up and have them hot tanked (cleaned) and magnufluxed or crack checked to make sure all is good with the world. After that then you can figure out where to go but don't do anything until those are done.
strip the block down(be sure not to nick the crank with the rods, just pull the caps off, then slide a pair of rubber grips from a set of pliars over the studs and pull out the piston), have it cleaned/baked/blasted, etc. then have the machine shop install freeze plugs and cam bearings. meanwhile, you can inspect the crank and determine if it needs to be turned(if it does, take it to the shop, have it cut down and purchase oversized bearings.) you can also clean the heads, install new valve stem seals, clean spark plug threads, check valve springs, rods/pistons. any haynes book from here on can assist in the assembly (procedures and specs/clearances). also, shop around for a reputable shop. ask local mechanics, friends, family and dont be afraid to ask about price.
i talked to my machine shop and they said $80 to clean and check the block and $40 for the heads is this a reasonable price ??
Not to bad but I would call around some. I don't like paying more than I need to. You might see if you can get a discount from "your" machine shop if they get to do all the work.
Good luck
