I am replacing the auto hubs on my 89' f150 with manual. can i just buy manual hubs or do i need to do some sort of conversion from auto to manual. also, any recommendations on what brands to look at?
From having owned Fords with auto hubs and from working at a Ford dealer
> autos are generally unreliable and tend to disengage when you're stuck bad. most people on here switch from auto to manual.
I agree with this and approve this message 100%.
My worse stuck had to be when I was going up an icy steep hill on PAVEMENT, my auto lock hubs failed on my almost brand new Ranger at the top and I slide down the hill backwards in 2x4.

sorry, but that gives off a very funny image
I should add that I never had auto hubs fail on me personally, but mine were the newer systems in a '99 ranger and a '00 f150 that are more reliable than the old body style f150 and bronco style hubs. But with a decrease in reliablity and a big cost its just not worth it to switch from manual to auto.
auto hubs suck, they arent reliable and they lock/unlock for no reason at all. i have seen a few ppl brake u-joints and the hubs themselves b/c the hub would unlock and then once the axle got spinning inside it would lock again and cause all sorts of havoc internally.
my philosophy is, if you are too lazy to get out and lock your hubs in, then you dont need a truck. go buy a subaru AWD
not all trucks require the conversion kit warn offers, however every truck i have torn into did need it. the auto hubs integrate the bearing retainer for the outter wheel bearing. when you remove the auto hub you have to replace the inner hub with the 2 spanner nuts and the middle lock washer. you can buy the kit from ford and i think it was about the same as the warn so if you dont have a warn supplier near you, you can order at the counter at ford. they should have it in stock since all 80-96 F150-F350's used them (of course F150's are different from F250/350's)
