Putting my truck in 4 is no problem but being ignorant of the shift pattern Im unable to tell whether Im in 4 high or 4 low and I have one hell of a time putting it back in 2. Any of you guys have a diagram of the fwd shift pattern and some suggestions on how I can ease this task??
Is your truck 4spd or auto? In my 79 F150 NP435/NP205 I had a hard time shifting out of 4L. The easiest way I found was putting the truck in 1st gear and quickly letting off the clutch and when the truck began to roll I pulled back on the gear shift. This worked really well but probably only works with manual trans. It all went away when I rebuilt my xcase though.

mine is a 73 f250 with a 4sp mine sometimes depended on weather you locked the hubs in then put in in 4wd or put it in 4wd then locked in the hubs sometimes that mattered but i just put it in 1st and let it go the shift the tcase into neutral then stop push the clutch in then shift into 4h or 2wd
First of all what type of t-case do you have? Is it a NP205 or NP203? If it is a 205 then the pattern is as ubereal2 said but the NP203 case has a different pattern.
If I remember correctly the pattern goes something simliar to this:
N
4L
4H
It's been a while since I've dealt with the 203 cases. I'm sure someone here will correct this
My truck is a 76 f-250 and is an automatic. I dont need to lock the hubsin mine. Getting in to 4wd is not really the problem as much as getting out. Im pretty sure 4 low is at the top and it almost seems as though 2wd is at the bottom left.
A common cause of the xfer case binding is tire size differences between the front and rear tires. If there is a difference, the case will bind when it's in 4H or 4L and be difficult to shift. When I purchased my truck the PO had mismatched tires (31-10.50/15, but different brands front to rear) and it would be a little difficult to shift out of 4x4. The tires were up to 3/4" difference in height, which is enough to cause some binding. Or it could be entirely a mechanical problem in the xfer case...
Good luck!

Also, and I've had this happen, if the gearing between the front and rear differentials are different it will also cause binding in the t-case. I had a truck that had 3:50's in the front and 3:88's in the rear. I had the same problem and once I changed the rear to match the front it became easier. Just my experience.
sometimes with a 205 if you back up a little it will shift out easier.i can actually shift mine out of 4l with it rolling.just put tranny in neutral and yank the shifter, only makes a little noise.
You can shift on the fly. My uncle does it with the 1-ton township truck. It's a 205 transfer case also. Just put the shifter in nuetral and shift back into 2wd. It kind of makes a zinging noise and maybe a little gear chatter, but that's it. Been doing it that way for years now with no issues.
I've found shifting on the fly is easiest. Steady throttle, apply a little pressure to transfer case lever, let up on throttle slightly and transfer case lever moves right in place. 2wd to 4wd, 4wd to 2wd, either way this is the easiest way for me to shift.
