Is a 302 (87-93 mustang) timing cover the sames as a 95 F150 351W timing cover? My father in law has an anti-freeze leak and was told most likely the gasket but can be the timing cover. Ford told him $180 to fix the gaskets but $700 if the timing cover is needed. I'm trying to save him so money if possible.
Ford 289, 302, 351W timing covers are the same. They can have some differences though. On late models such as your 95 F-150....the dip stick should be located in the side of the block. Early covers were had the dipstick hole in the cover. Some dipstick holes were in the side of the oil pan. Another difference in front covers are the manual fuel pump holes. Early covers had these holes and when the late model vehicles went to electric fuel pumps they just didn't mill out the holes in the front cover. Being as Ford started to put fuel injection on the majority of the vehicles in the mid 80's you should be ok with your 87-93. The only other difference you need to look for is the water passages. These can be in a different orientation. But if you get an early timing cover with the holes for the mechanical fuel pump and the cover also has the hole for the oil dipstick, you can just use a gasket and blockoff plate for the fuel pump and fill the oil dipstick hole with silicone (RTV). I apologize if this is confusing at all.
I'm going to give my timing cover to my father in law in case this is the problem. I told him that we can do this but he already gave Ford the ok to do the job.
77 Bronco, I'm not confused at all. I actually forgot about the old covers having the hole for the dipstick. I new about the fuel pump hole. I have to get a block off plate for this one.
justanother1, no thanks needed for the help. Just another note...Don't forget to make sure the new cover has the same cooling passages as the old cover. Otherwise your water pump will not work. Good luck.
The whole problem could be the water following the threads of the bolts going into the water passages. A little thread sealer is the fix for that. My wifes truck had just this problem.
