Question MBRP Turbo Back Kit "Down Pipe" Size

Hi Guys,

I'm getting ready to go 4" straight piped with the MBRP 409SS kit.

It seems this kit comes with a 4" Down Pipe and I've read that a stock 7.3 non-chipped engine should stay below 4 inches on the DP.

Any knowledge on this subject would be appreciated, maybe the design of this system requires it?

Thanks in advance, Walt

I have never seen anyone use anything larger than a 4 inch down pipe. After that the rest of the exhaust system can go up. After installing my 4inch down pipe last night I wouldnt imagine any thing larger would fit. I know some people are installing a 3.5 inch but I figure if you are replacing stock you might as well go for the 4.

Hi Hosemandc,
My question dealt with staying less than a 4" DP on a stock engine, like stay with the stock 3" DP or go up to a 3.5" IF that is possible with MBRP kit.

The downpipe that most closely matches the outlet of the exhaust housing is best. On a stock turbo, that would 3.5".

If you can get the kit with a 3.5" DP, go for it. Otherwise don't worry about it. It's NOT that big of a difference.

An aftermarket DP will flow much better than the disfigured stocker regardless of size.
If you plan on mods that will increase egt's, at least go with a 3.5" aftermarket DP.

I have read that the 4" doesn't have the back pressure needed without all the mods and it is to free flowing on a stock truck. I believe it created a little turbo lag on the low end if i remember reading correctly. I have the mbrp turbo back with 4" dp and 5" exhaust and i didn't notice any negative effects.

Backpressure = bad. Your truck does NOT need back pressure.

What the 4" dp does do is move the powerband up a little more.

The reduced back pressure from a free-flowing exhaust will help the turbo spool up better.

i would go with a 4 inch down pipe. if you do any mods or tow you will have reduced egts with a 4 inch over a 3.5 also i recommend getting the muffler delete pipe with your kit. it sounds awesome

What's this muffler thing people keep talking about?

4" = Good and it will support anything you may want to do in the future

I heard of one once, apparently some sort of device that restricts the exhaust and makes it quiter.
Why would you want do that?

Hey Thanks Guys,

I know a little bit more now, I tow a 30ft goose about 6k dry wt. I haven't had problem one pulling hills up to the mountains, I've just been trying to improve any design flaws like air intake and exhaust.

Thanks to FTE, I do all my own maintenance and have fixed a lot of stuff, VSS sensor, over head computer, door ajar light, etc.

Only problem is time sharing on the computer with the little women, she only works 3 days a week
