I have a 78 bronco that I am doing a lot of work on from my dad. Upon weeks of research and looking for a 400 date coded d3ae-b I just cont seem to find what I am looking for. One question is dose anyone here have one that I could buy. Anouther is what am I to look for in vin # to identify the d3ae-b on the ford and murcury's that they where in in. My goal is to have an EFI 400 with an aod to help keep this truck on the road for a long time thanks everone!
Are you looking for a spare block to reuild, as i 'm a little confused, is there any particular reason for that particular casting number as well (theres a couple different ones that are good blocks)
If you plan to use an AOD, you need a block with the 'small block' bolt pattern. These were in some '73 Rancheros. That could be the d3ae-b block, but I don't know.
Lentech makes an adapter to use an AOD with the 'big block' bolt pattern, it is pretty expensive. They also sell a beefed up AOD ($$), which you will need if your motor puts out more than stock power.
I grew up with my Father's 78 bronco and bought about 6 years ago now I want to update it with spfi and an aod. I woud like the small bb varint to keep the transfer case location the same if possible.to keep the pinon depth on the driveshaft the same
they aren't that easy to come by, you could be looking for a while. if you do find one it'll likely be going for goofy bucks. you could move over to a W block, build yourself a nice stroker EFI Clevor and still have a few bones in your pocket.
I am a firm beliver in that the 400 is the last of the interceptors also could a EFI400 pass a smog test without the smog heads in tucson they test emissions forever

1973 Ford/Mercury with 400 engine: 5th digit in VIN " S " is a 400.
Small block trans. pattern were also popular in the '73 LTD
Gentlemen,
I've spent close to 15 years looking for small bell 400s. 1973 seems to be the only year but I still check 1972 and 1974 Ford and Mercury intermediates. I do look into the fullsize but I don't know of anyone pulling one out of a fullsize. Those that I know came out of a car and not off a heap of motors, came out of Rancheros and one Torino Wagon. I have NEVER seen the D3AE casting that is printed in Tom Monroes book. My block and every other one I've seen or know about is a D1AE. So you know, 400s could be backed by either the FMX or C6 in 1973. Your odds of finding one of these blocks is rare, very rare. You'll have better luck finding a D7xx block and it will bolt right in place of your trucks 400.
I have a '73 LTD and like most, it has the BB bolt pattern. I'm with Jason on this one. The only SB bell block, casting number to surface so far is the D1AE-A2C. You may be old and grey before stumbling across one.
If you have to use an AOD, you may as well bite the bullet and get the adapter plate needed for a 460 conversion. Another option may be the E4OD.
you do not need a small block bolt hole pattern or an adapter plate.
art carr and some one else ,i for get who make an aod with a big block
bolt pattern. As for the efi ,I am in the proscess of doing one now.
5.8l efi ,a9l computer and wiring harness.the manifold has to be cut and welded and adapter plates. for most this is expensive.I am a tool and die maker with cnc experience. I work in a reseach and developmet shop. all work is being done by me at no coast ,just time . will let you know how it turns out
Ya got a part # for this big block AOD trans? I can't find it on Art Carr's site.
This is what I'm talking about.
22600 - ADAPTER PLATE KIT - FORD ADAPTER KIT 460 ENGINE TO AOD (USE ONLY AC CONVERTER AND INPUT SHAFT
Product ID: 22600 Price: $565.53 http://artcarr.com/storm.cfm?funnela...ProductID=7192
I'm not questioning their existence, I was looking for a price. Since AODs have an integral bellhousing, the only way they can do it is to extensively modify the case or cast one from scratch. It's probably a high $$ item best left to big HP applications.
