Flushing Radiator
Flushing Radiator
When flushing the radiator how do I get all the fluid out of the block on my 352?
The last time I did it I could'nt get enough antifreeze back in for a 50/50 mix. The radiator shop said to remove the thermostat but that did nothing.
Can anyone help?

If there are no drains in the sides of the block, then you cannot get all the coolant out.
Here is what I have found that works well.
Flush the system with a coolant flushing kit, until the water is clear.
Fill it, and run the engine until it gets to operating temperature. Around the block 2 or 3 times should be enough.
Drain it again. Do this until the water runs pretty clear out of it. If you need to do this several times, you might want to use a block cleaner for a day or two, then flush it a couple more times.
Once the water is clear, drain the system one more time.
Add 1 gallon of antifreeze, straight.
Once you have added 1 gallon, fill the system up with 50/50 mix.
The water left in the block is about 1 gallon, so adding
a gallon of antifreeze will make what is in there close to a 50/50 mix.
Good luck!

thanx banjo!
I kept flushing with water till when i drained it it ran pretty clear. The manual says it holds 7 gallons and when I was flushing it it was taking about 4 gal. to fill it, so I thought if I put 4 gal of antifreeze and about 3 gal in the block I would be good. Well I could only get three gallons of antifreeze and that put me at
-25f. I think this is what happend last time I did this and I had to keep draining a little and adding more antifreeze till I got it where I need it but at 10 bucks a gal that gets spendy. I have Installed a water heater so I'm not going to stress about it. Thanx again!
