The 81 is the body, which in this case means a conventional cab. I don't have the book in front of me, but if I remember correctly the cab only trucks, and the flatbed trucks had their own separate body codes other than 81.
The "C" in front of the 81 indicates an interior trim level.
I'll post back tonight with the details.

Here goes! I checked the books and here are the body codes I found (there are a lot more, these are germane to the discussion):
Platform (flat bed): 80
Standard Cab, F/T 100 - 1100: 81A
Custom Cab, F/T 100 - 1100: 81B
Driveaway without windshield frame: 84
Drive-away with windshield frame: 85
Rack: 86
Note: 84 and 85 have no doors, and no roof or back to the cab. Just a cowling, firewall and front end.

The "C" trim code is this: Medium green crush vinyl and medium green ladder pattern woven plastic.

John; if the "C" is an interior code, before the body code (81); wouldn't there also be a letter code after the 81 for body type to determine if standard cab or custom?
I'm not just talking about Rogers 65 4x4, all 65-66 models etc.

It doesn't always show up. Mine is a Custom Cab, but the "B" is missing from the VIN plate.
I am the second owner, and got the truck in near original condition, so I know the plate is original.
Mine isn't the only one like it, I have seen a lot of trucks both with and without it.
(Besides, it matches the frame VIN.)
Don't know how to explain why.
(PS: Need any of those linkage parts? I am getting ready to scrap the truck.)
