You're probably going to have to go with a trans that's compatible with the engine unless you can find an adapter (Advance Adapters?). I would recomend an updated trans anyway because the old trans may not be able to handle the torque and power of the newer powerplant. If you want to stay with a 3 speed they are definitely available for the 302. As far as linkages are concerned (I'm not familiar with your rig) you should be able to use the stock shifter linkage from the column if you go 3 spd, and only use one of them for an auto

I can't help you with the tranny. But I have some questions about the engine transplant. Have you actually done it yet? I'm putting a 302/C6 in my 60 F100. So far all I've done is take the front end off and remove the 223 and four speed, and ordered the motor mounts (Trans Dapt 4145's). Do you have any pointers for the installtion? Any help would be appricated.

Most important though is the anchors. Sort them out before you do your engine swap or you will end up where I am at the moment. My truck flies but it makes me extremely nervous trying to stop it. Its disc brakes for me!!

What kind of starter are you using? This my sound silly but I've read treads where people were talking about using gm style starters with the solenoid attached to the starter. There is a wire that runs to the resistor on the side that goes to the coil. This is to give the coil a full 12.? volts during starting. I also know that there are two types of coils. The old style with three prongs (two large and one small) and the newer with four prongs.(two large and two small). Obviously, the big terminals are the leads to/from the battery and starter. one of smaller one is for the starter button or lead on your switch. The other, if you have the four, is connected to the coil. Since you have points, the starter doesn't stay engaged until you start the engine. Anyway I would check those wires to the coil to make a long story short.
Then again I could be wrong.
Good luck,
Chris
