OK, I know ITP is the most popular regulated return system, however I want to do the in-tank and pre-pump mods as well. I also want to get rid of the factory fuel bowl. So which fuel system would you go with?
1. ITP regulated return kit, ITP in-tank and pre-pump kit http://www.itpdiesel.com/store.php?crn=152
I hear you but wonder. What big benefit is gained by eliminating the stock fuel bowl up to xxxHP? Also, what fuel pump longevity issues are you dealing with? Just pump up the volume there and then what happens to the stock pump? There are design parameters. I cannot say what the maximum operating PSI is for the stock pump but I do know that it will wear out quicker under higher resistance, like any pump.
So I guess the big question is, for your HP level, how much fuel do you need? You can figure this out mathematically but it is beyond me. In a gasser this is so much easier. If you decide to go aftermarket fuel supply then skip all of this. It will come with it's own delivery and HP specs. Let me know what it is. Also, beware of entrained air in the fuel when approaching higher PSI levels. That churning will rear it's head.
Chris after looking at both Bob and Dennis's fuel system for quite a while I choose to go the ITP path due to construction and configuration. Also Dennis said he is working on a kit to remove the OEM bowl when you do the prepumps and reg return.
Chris, I've got a couple things. One, I like the ITP system better. I like the design and layout of it, as well as the use of hard metal lines in specific areas. I did a lot of research on the systems, and liked the ITP system better, but ended up making my own anyway to try and save money - that didn't happen though. I would have been better off to by a pre-made system. It would have been both cheaper and easier.
Two, ITP is a sponsor here at FTE. He's been a sponsor since about November. If possible, I like to buy from the vendors that support our site.
Mike, I did checks of the fuel pressure both before and after I removed my fuel bowl. The pressure in the bowl was about 7 psi higher than what it shows on the regulator. After the replacement, the pressure in the Y-block is only about 2 psi higher than the regulator. The fuel bowl is a restriction, and although it probably doesn't affect the power levels, it may affect fuel pump longevitiy.
I second building it yourself, but that's just my preference because I like doing things myself.
We saved some on a buddie's truck, but not much.
I know Dennis' kit is TOP notch. He has done his homework and put together a fine kit for a great price.
When I do my own truck, I might buy Dennis' reg return kit, and buy the pre-pump and filter head stuff myself, I know you can save money on that part.
The other thing I like is that you can use the Baldwin 1212 filter/seperator now for 8 bucks, and you can get it in most any truck stop etc, instead of paying 30+ for a retarded ford cartridge.
