Serpentine Belt Replacement - difficulty?

I've have a squeeky serpentine belt and would like to change it. I reviewed the service procudures and they indicate a special tool for removing the fan. Is this tool necessary and if so, is it worth just bringing it in to the shop?

Hmmmmm. I didn't think it was necessary to remove the fan to change the belt. Now I'm gonna have to go look at my diagram to see. I know it's a pain in the kazotz to do, so be ready to lose your religion--lol. By the time you order and wait on the special tool you can probably pay to have it done, but it ain't gonna be cheap. I think the belt is like $70 plus the service time. Not sure about the tool cost.

you wont catch me trying to replace a belt with the fan on, but i have seen people do it. no speacial tools required, just a fan clutch wrench and a pulley holding tool, or some use a extension in one of the holes on the water pump. if this is the first time, and you have some extra time, remove the radiator as well. you will love the xtra room, and so will your back.

LOL--I've never had to do one that the motor wasn't out of so it's never really been an issue for me. I really didn't know what to tell him. I've always had the "luxury" of being able to stare at the front of the motor "naked" when threading it back on and the fan was always removed.

Looking at mine today, it looks like I have no choice but to split the shroud and remove the baffle behind the fan in order to sneak the belt around the fan and behind.

If you have a single alternator, the fan is driven off the back (smooth side) of the belt. All you need to do is get the belt off the crank pully, the power steering pump and the idler on the driver side and the belt will come out between the top of the fan and the idler just above it toward the passenger side. If you remove the wing at the top of the shroud on the passenger side, you will have room to work to get the tensioner released and locked back (there is a little tab that will lock it with the belt loose).

Remove the wing.
Lock the tensioner.
Take the belt off the alternator
Go underneath and work the belt off the lower pulleys. (Crank,PS,AC,Tensioner)
Go back to the top on the passenger side.
Pull the belt out over the fan pully.

Not a lot of space underneath, but doable.

Look at the belt diagram under the hood and compare it with your belt setup, then think about it and you will see that a single alternator does not need to have the belt snake around in front of the fan.

I'll be checking that out in the morning. That is GREAT information. It still sounds like a pain compared to something like the 5.4L gas, but not nearly as bad as I thought.

I appreciate your help with this, maybe I should consult the forum before the repair manual next time.

i have never split a 6.0 shroud that was factory connected. it is one piece, and i have always removed them as one piece.

So do you need to remove the fan on a single alternator to replace the belt? Not sure what the answer is to this from what I read here.
