transmission tech question

Well, I'm sure I'm not the first to do this so I am hoping that someone out there can tell me the easy way out the my current situation. I have a '56 F100 that I dropped a '68 360/C6 combo into. I was looking for a quick drop in and run setup as I also have a '56 Merc M100 that is soon to be the focus of all my attention to restore. What I failed to think about was the fact that the donor '68 F100 had the split driveshaft/carrier bearing setup. Because of the shorter wheelbase on my '56, I was hoping to run a single driveshaft. This requires changing out the tailshaft of the C6. I can tear into motors/electrical and other things but trannies are new to me. Is it a major deal to swap tailshafts and housings? I would think that a full size Ford car tranny would be compatible but I am looking for the wisdom of others before I get too deep into this. I know that I will be cutting and welding a driveshaft so logic told me to get rid of the split driveshaft. Any thoughts/suggestions are welcome.

I think your wise to get rid of the split carrier type shaft, but why do you believe you will have to change the tailshaft of the C6? It is possible to use the C6 slip joint to make up a new shaft for the truck. If you are a competent welder you can actually do it all in house. It does take care and attention to get the alignment/balance correct though. When in doubt have a competent driveline specialist do the work for you.

Thanks for your comments. I need to change out the tailshaft because the slip shaft for the driveshaft is rearward of the carrier bearing with only a 4 bolt mounting plate on the rear of the tranny. I have thought of several "creative" ways around this (cutting/welding the slipshaft so that it bolts onto the rear of the tranny is one radical suggestion)but the more welding and cutting I do the more prone I will be to vibration. The simplest solution appears to be cutting both driveshafts and welding up a mounting plate for the bearing. I will be chatting with a fellow at Driveline Specialists this next week and I will get his take on it as well. Thanks again.
