Yes the feds set the minimum wage for the entire country.

The Federal minimum wage for the handicapped is $0.00/hr.

Further to this I have to respond because this is what I read about the MW in the US ...the other day.

As of Jan. 1, 18 states raised their minimum-wage levels. Now, 29 of the 50 states pay a $5.15 minimum wage. That would barely get you a cup of coffee here.

And it gets worse --the lowest minimum wage in the U.S. is in Kansas where fast food workers are getting $2.65 an hour.
Heck, if we're looking for people to fill jobs here in Alberta, we should be looking in Kansas.

the minimum wage is/was meant as a starting Wage. not a sustaining wage. it's "the foot in the door" wage. having been an executive board member(union) on wage negotiation committees i know our contract raise increases in yrs the govt raised minimum wage were nuts.
the minimum wage was designed for new workers, not a 40 y/o to support a family. improve your skills, learn a trade, get the GED, and the wage will rise.
minimum wage is for minimum skills. NOT for living like a person that stayed in school, learned to read and do basic math(make change) and understand that minimum wage doesn't change often. it's for teenagers in menial jobs. you want more, learn something that makes you a commodity to an employer, or start your own business.
this isn't a political post. it's a fact.

I'm gonna call BS on this guy. He's leaving something out on this $2.65 business. $5.15 is a Federal set wage and unless these fast food workers are waiting on tabels for tips then he's messed up his findings somewhere.

BS indeed, NOBODY in the US makes 2.65/hr except waiters/waitresses who get ~15-20% of each bill as gratuity.

Minimum wage is also set by individual counties of that state.

The original poster was asking what exactly is minmum wage.

And it was answered by many.

$9.15 here is not the same as say across the bay.

How did I find this out?

Googled it.

I didn't realize that it varies that much through out the country.

absolutely it varies. that's part of the irrelevance of the federal attempt to do min.wage. 22 states have a higher MW on thier own. and how many more states need it jammed up thier butt. in my state it's $7.25. another gift to those that "need". i need. i'm a vet, disabled, and trying to pay off the bills i was left with after the medical issue my family just went through. i don't see a raise in that benefit. this needs to be in the "club" so i don't get banned.

That $2.65 is for tip-earners, and there is a secondary minimum wage for them (it may be $2.65, I don't recall). If their tips don't make up the difference between that and the $5.15 federal minimum wage, then the employer has to make it up. Any server worth their salt should far exceed the $5.15/hr.

Aside from the minimum wage, Carl alluded to it--a "living wage". In Indiana, several years ago, it was $34,000/yr, which is roughly $17/hr. That's to pay a mortgage or rent, cars, insurance, food, utilities, etc, but let me tell you, at that income level, you would have to be very disciplined in your spending.

i need to move to Indiana. my SSDI is much less than what Pelosi, Reid, or any other representative is going to give in the minimum wage. i've worked for 25 yrs, but someone coming into the work force with no skills will receive 2x's the wage i get being disbled and a vet. this is part of the reason i'm opposed to the minimum wage legislation.
LET THEM EARN THE RAISE. here i sit feeding Sassy my dinner so she's not hungry, and the gov't is going to give people that have done nothing 2x's my wage. damn i wish this were in club fte so i could go nuts

I agree Carl. I can't post my views on the minimum wage in this section of FTE. I'll say that the raise the congress is planning is a payback to the unions instead of help to people receiving minimum wage. The union workers will gain much more.
