exhaust possibilities

Im thinking i definately need to do something to my exhaust. i have been putting it off for quite some time and really NEED to stop procrastinating. Im thinking i dont particularly want to rework the downpipes so maybe i will run one pipe all the way back from each downpipe. I know that is difficult because of the gas tanks. SOO my solution is so run them both in the stock location or near it anyways and have then exit together or one on either side of the bed. And now the dilema...the mufflers. Running the pipes next to eachother, it would be hard to squeeze in two mufflers. I could do a glasspack on each pipe but im afraid that i might kill some poor old lady every time i drive it. Acctually, im more concerned about noise in the cab, not outside. What is my best option to keep the noise down in the cab but still run dual pipes? sorry for being so long winded

Yup, using two complete stock exhaust systems, cutting one downpipe off each, and running them parallel in the stock location is an option I seriously considered too. Even planned on using a pair of glass packs - and installing one of them shifted towards the front and the other shifted towards the back so they would clear each other allowing me to keep the pipes close together.

Another option might be to join the two exhaust pipes together just ahead of the muffler using a flattened out 4" to 3" reducer - like I did when I constructed the Y-pipe in my picture gallery. Then you could run a single 3" exhaust from the muffler back. Of course that would require buying a piece of 3" and having it bent to match the stock tail pipe. You can buy both the reducer and a 10 foot long stick of 3" pipe at Napa for a fairly reasonable price though.

BTW, as long as you install a tail pipe after it, a straight-through glasspack style muffler isn't too loud and sounds pretty darned good behind an IDI....

Why not have BOTH pipes run into a straight-through dual inlet/outlet muffler? That way you are only paying for one muffler instead of two

I went with the Dynomax kit... may not be the " best", but the price was really good, came with Y pipe to exhaust tip, 3" into 4" with a 5" tip...

The Auto Jet system is prolly the best you can get for your money. Comes complete from the exhaust manifolds to tail pipe (including a mandrel bent Y-Pipe). Around $300 delivered.

Click on LD3. It's listed as 7.3 but works on all OBS fords

i have never heard of the auto jet name before. I looked at the diagram of the setup they have for the 7.3's and where the downpipes merge still look just as restricting to me. I'm still looking into them though..

here is a pic of the dynomax kit... the Y pipe is still not the best, but it works well, was a good power upgrade, and cost me $300 canadain... its nice because it opens up to a 4" muffler and tail pipe from a 3" pipe, and ends with a really nice looking 5" stainless tip....

was well worth the $300

That is a decent price...its looking like its a little over 300 for it. Do you think they would sell it w/o the muffler? I have my heart set on a glasspack...

oh ok then...i guess that wouldn't be too necessary to put a glasspack on right away anyways. How does it compare to the sound of those banks mufflers if you know?

Have you actually installed this one on your truck? If so, maybe you could put some picts in your gallery - especially of the Y-pipe....
