If I decide to put an automatic trans in my 59 F-100 with an engine swap will I need to alter the transmission hump in the floor? The truck was originally straight 6 with manual 3 speed. Am thinking small V-8 with C-6?
No. The transmission hump is not a problem even with the C-6 which is rather large. The crossmember will need to be altered however. I have seen suggestions to remove it completely but that would not be a good idea as that is what gives support to the attachment point for the rear of the front springs. (Assuming you are using the stock front setup, If you have Mustang II or Volare that would be another issue completely.)
Thanks Is there a stock engine/auto trans combo from a later year Ford car or truck that is easier to fit than others? Do they all need a custom drive shaft even if you change the yolk on the third member?
The plan I am considering is to buy a later model Ford truck (or car) that is a beater to use as a donor vehicle for the drive train. I am torn between this approach or just rebuilding my old in-line 223.
Any opinions on driveability? Either way I would want to drive at highway speeds so if I keep the 223 I'll need to change rear end ratio anyway. Thanks
