Engine makes whining noise

I have a 2000 Ford Expedition XLT 5.4L. There is a whining noise coming from the engine. It gets louder when the transmission is put into drive, but quiets down while driving. In other words, the noise is prevalent at low torque. It sounded like the alternator, but changing that didn't help. I also changed the serpentine blet, and with the advice of a local mechanic, the tensioner assembly. Unfortunately, I still have the same problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated considering I'm stationed in Germany. Thanks

I had a similar problem with my 00 EB and I believe it was the transmission. It sounded like it was coming from the engine, but once I changed out the fliud and filter the noise went away and has not returned. It was more like a high pitched "moan" than a "squeal" or a "whine". That is getting pretty technical, I know (ha, ha). Sometimes it is hard to describe the sounds that come out of these things.

Thanks for the tidbit of info. Unfortunately, I had a similar noise on my transmission also. I changed the filter and fluid to no avail. After 3 different dealership visits (was still under the extended warranty), they replaced the transmission for me.

Any chance it could be the bearing in the idler pulley that the Serpentine belts runs around?

I know it sounds funny, but check your PCV.

I had the same sound....dealer said it was the idler pulley....then when it got in there, it was the PCV valve.

looking at changing the serpentine belt....I know on some cars, they say to change the tensioner also...do i need to do that on this truck?

Also, i've never seen a recommendation for changing the timing belt....????

Whistle

I couldn't stand it anymore and bought a new PCV valve last night and installed as I knew it would be cold this AM. 16 deg F and she whistled better than ever! Even scared me it was so loud. Any other ideas out there? So far replaced idler pulley bearning and PCV

Also checked hose and it looks good with no cracks that I could see or feel

Check for an air leak. My wifes car had a crack in the rubber housing going into the carb/throttle body and it whistled so loud it scared me.

Leak causing whistle

Thanks DKoenig but can you be a little more specific--you said rubber housing--do you mean rubber hose? And did you have to take something apart to get at it or is the hose? real obvious? I have 2000 NAV---I know there is a large plastic cover on the top -- just wondering if that covers this thing that sprung a leak. Any further info you can supply would be greatly appreciated

Thank you

on my wifes toyota camry it was the large rubber housing that comes in from the air intake (filter) directly into the throttle body. it had cracked right at the large hose clamp that secured it to the throttle body. if your 2000 nav is like my 2000 expy then under that plastic cover is where i am talking about. the rubber tube (large hose) connects to the throttle body there. check that.

hope it helps

Don

Whistle

Thanks Don---I would call that the throttle body air intake--lots of air move through there. I don't know why it would be cold temperature related. But certainly worth checking

Thanks

exactly what i was talking about. just not eloquently ;-)

maybe cold related cause the rubber heats up and it re-seals.

Air Intake

I've checked the air intake system and can find no cracks or leaks. I also cleaned and lubed the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. It was plenty dirty. But she's still whistling -- last thing I did was to apply belt dressing to the serpentine belt---that changed some noises alright but don't know if it solved the whistle problem--but tonight and the next night we are to get cold and I should know if the belt dressing helped.

If it quieted down, then I suppose I should replace the belt and tensioner (ther belt has been replaced with MotorC. about 20-30K ago). But at least I'll know it wasn't something like the alternator or something that can strand me. I just don't know if a S. belt like that can whistle like it's slipping with all that contact area unless the tensioner has lost tension and the belt is loose in cold weather.

I'll find this sooner or latter!

Whistle

Well it's 10deg out and she's whistling dixie so the belt dressing didn't help. It's cold enough now that I may be able to get it to whistle in the driveway and use a stethescope to try and find where it's coming from. In warmer weather the sound goes away and I haven't been able to diagnose.
