9" Rear Identification

Hi.

Just bought 9" rear end from a '72 'Explorer' pickup to replace the stock 3.92 in my '55 F100. Tag on it reads:
WDM AG 2DA
3.00 9 343A
Seller said it is 'limited slip'. What do the numbers say about it other than 3.00 ratio and 9-inch? Is limited slip same as posi-traction?

The little I can find out from mag. articles shows that as stock the locking diff. would be listed 3L00 9
The 2DA is for the 1972 and the DA has to do with the 1st week in December. This is from Rodders Digest by Rick Campbell not sure of the date not shown on my copy.

ps. I am looking for a 3rd member 3.50:1 to to 4.11:1 prefering closest to 3.89:1 to replace my 3.00:1 which is to high of a gear ration with the over drive trans. Let me know if you have one available I am in So. Calif. Ed ke6bnl@juno.com.

Thanks Ed! Guess it's not locking 'cuz there's no 'L' on the tag...The 3.92 I'll have available soon is a stock 1955. I assume you're looking for a 9".

The article also mentions that when looking for a locking diff. at a junk yard it is not uncommon for people to switch tags with non locking so others won't take it before you make the arrangement to purchase or meant to get at a lower price. The locking feature could been added later or can be added. The old one sound like what I have removed from my old 50 f1. Good luck and try out this site

good luck Ed

The best thing is to stop by your local Ford dealer's Parts Dept. and they can tell you anything you want to know about the rear.Everything is listed right in the parts books. I used to decipher them all the time.

Thanks again, Ed. Checked out that site before--Didn't have my #'s listed. Seller said he is the original owner parting-out the '72 'Explorer' Pickup and the rear end is a 'rebuilt/limited slip'. The axle ends look new, but I see lots of leakage and gaskets oozing out around the 3rd member. I'll disassemble and inspect before installing, of course...
