whats the differance between 355 410 456 gears i want to get bigger tires on my truck and have 355 gears want fast take dont want to mash the gas and go no where its a 94 f250 idi diesel with dana 50 front and 60 rear
I was wondering Dave, how much of a difference in takeoff and top speed would it be between 4.10's and 3.55's? Currently I dislike the takeoff with my rig (have to shift at least 3 times to get through a stoplight) and top speed is only about 90mph. Well, takeoff isn't too bad starting out in 2nd
ok i thought that was in my sig but its an e40d and 38's
With 38"s you need to switch to 4.10 gears just to get close to stock gearing. The stock 235/85/16 tires are roughly 32"s so the math works like this..
38 / 32 = 1.1875 = 18.75% bigger tires
4.10 / 3.55 = 1.1549 = 15.49% decrease in gear ratio
18.75% - 15.49% = 3.25% difference - which is pretty close. Still a little higher geared than stock, but about as close as you're going to get.

With his 38"s? Like a SLUG! With stock (or nearly stock) sized tires, the 4.10s will give you MUCH peppier takeoff (about 15.5% more), BUT it will also run higher RPMs at a given speed and will top out earlier on the highway. Stock tires and 3.55s will turn about 2600 RPMs at 65 mph. The same truck with the same tires and 4.10s will turn right at 3000 RPMs at 65 mph. The effects on gas mileage should be obvious.
I have the two trucks in my sig, and the one with the 410s is quite quick from 0-60 mph. If I shifted it right it would probably beat the one with 3.55s in a 0-60 race by a full couple of seconds. HOWEVER, it sure sounds like it is working hard at 65 mph and 70-75 is its top speed. Compared to the one with the 3.55s that seems to be almost loafing along at 60 or 65, and will bury the speedo needle at 85 well before it hits redline.
I was wondering about my own rig too Cheaper . I have a ZF5 and I don't tow much at all. I can understand being slow off the line with the 3.55's but I think a turbo would help in that department. If anything I could go with a happy medium 3.73 gear ratio...

Heck man, you've already got 5th gear OD - what more could you want? You have the best of both worlds - the 4.10s for low end and pullin' and the OD to make up for it on the highway and in the fuel bills.....
'Course it also means you also got stuck with the POS DM flywheel setup - unless you've already ditched it
Well dang cheaper! I'm shootin for power but also for mid 20's for mpg. Right now my current 17mpg isn't the greatest. I have done some testing and I can get up to 20 if I slow down to about 45mph (about 1700 rpms if I remember right). Sure I can rip your house off its foundation but it kills my mileage on the road soon as that needle goes past 2000 rpms (about 60mph). I wonder what my rpm would sit at with 3.73's? I'm told 3.73's would be ideal for a diesel...Sadly enough I still have the ol' DMF
Im a bit confused. I ve got the E40D with a 4:10 and hit 2000 and 63 mph(100 km). I get an average of 20 mpg on highway. Why is mine so different? or are standard tranny geared lower?
Ohhh I cant wait... With 3.55s and 315/75R16s and my soon to be aquired ZF... OD, 3.55s and 35s are going to be AWSOME on the highway... and the ZF has a lower first gear, so better on start up too... Ohhhh I can wait

WAAAAA! 17 mpg isn't good enough for my 3/4 ton truck, I want 20 mpg WAAAAA!
Just razzin' ya' man!
I'm happy to get 15 - when I can resist my urges and drive it gently enough....
Mr. Bob,
Watch the gear ratios on the ZF 5, one of the units has a low gear that is almost the same as the T19 low gear ratio. There were three different low gear ratios used.
An E4OD tranny low gear ratio is like second in any of the manuals, and it also has the highest overdrive ratio of all the transmissions.
The unit I am getting was rebuilt for this guy by his friend who owns a transmission shop locally. The guy built it with the lower first gear, and something about a " newer style " overdrive... they upgraded them in the later version I guess?? but this one has the lower 1st and updated OD...
