I have a 2003 F-350 deisel (6.0 liter) 4x4. The shift on the fly engages but the front wheels don't lock. I at least think it engages because when I turn it off I can hear a rattling like a chain and then there is a kind of a thump when it comes out. I would like to know why the front wheels don't lock and what I might be able to do to fix the problem.
The auto hubs do not have a good reputation. I swapped my auto hubs for manual hubs on my 2000 EX. You need to do the same and buy new auto hubs and they are not cheap.
Do a little searching around, in the Super Duty forum. You will find that you have a vacuum problem up front. A leak, or actuater problem. Chances are, that you only have a problem with one hub, and not both. With an open front diff, it will act as though both hubs are inop. You still have the option of using your hubs just like manual ones, turn the all of the way clockwise and your truck should once again work in 4X4. Most in this forum would recommend an aftermarket manual locking hub assembly.

If you have a vacuum guage just unplug the vacuum line on the top of the axle right by the front tire and hook the guage into the line. Turn the **** in the truck and check the guage, then turn the **** back to 2 wheel drive and check the guage again. You should see the guage move. More then likely you have a vacuum leak somewhere.
